Howard to Dallas

Would anyone be against the Saints trading Howard to the Cowboys and swapping 1st round picks. i.e. we receive Dallas' 11th pick and get to dump Howard's salary, Dallas gets Howard and our 16th pick.
Does this seem unreasonable to anyone? Why are we asking for another player in return when we can use the 11th pick to get D. Johnson, Shawne Merriman, Pac Man Jones, or Antrel Rolle all of who will most probably be gone if we are still picking in the 16th spot?

Although it would be nice to be able to draft one of those guys you mentioned, I don\'t think that is enough in return. Giving a pro bowl DE away just to move up 5 spots doesn\'t seem like a good value.

No way....It would be nice to get rid of that cap hit..but not at that price..

Because Johnson will not be there at #11. Merriman would be a stretch at pick #11, I beleive he will be there at #16. Pac-Man or Antrel could be there at # 11, but then again one of them could be there at #16 as well. Trading Howard for a 2nd rounder makes more sense. If we were to use him to move up in the draft, it should be to take a player we are very high on and has no chance of making it out of the top ten. What it boils down to, Johnson will definately be gone by #11, Merriman is a huge stretch for # 11 and one of Pac-Man or Rolle will be there at #16, mark my words

Isn\'t it sad how now Howard is refered to as only a cap hit...or a draft pick...

I wish we could keep him long term...and keep our other guys...

But, wish in one hand, crap in the other , and see which one fills up faster..haha

I dont think Johnson will be gone by 11. Think about it. Benson, C.Williams, R. Brown, Braylon Edwards, Mike Williams, Alex Smith, Aaron Rodgers all go in the top 8. That leaves 9 and 10 left to snag Johnson before the Saints could at 11. Neither Washington nor Detroit needs a linebacker as bad as they do a cornerback. Washington snags Pac Man at 9. Detroit picks up Rolle at 10. I think Johnson falls to us at 11.
Now youve got Will Smith starting at his natural spot all the time. Derrick Johnson immediately starts at LB. And now you have the cap flexibility to sign Duece, Horn, Bentley, and McKenzie long term.

And with the #3 selection in the 2005 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select........

Derek Johnson, Linebacker from the University of Texas

And the QB for Cleveland will be who?
Trust me Cleveland takes Rodgers or Smith. Whichever San Fran passes on.

Also I am only proposing this trade on the condition that Johnson is still on the board while Dallas is on the clock during the draft not before.

I got $20 saying Johnson doesnt make it out of the top 10, care to take it Stockman311?????

See my conditions to the trade above..also I don\'t bet on the draft. Too much oportunity for teams to trade up and down to fill need.

Ok Ok, I gotcha Stockman. IF Dallas was on the clock with the #11 and Johnson was still there, I would want to swap picks and pick up at least a 3rd, if not their 2nd.

Dallas gets Howard and #16 pick, we get #11 (DJ) and 2nd or 3rd. That is something i could live with. Just seems like we would be giving up alot for DJ (although I kno he is worth it) We need to at least pick up another pick for it all.

No way --- although it makes sense to drop the cap hit Howard is a proven commodity and has been a leader on our defense -- Only way I would agree to that is if there were a free agent linebacker who we could use the freed up money to land -- then it would be a good deal

I would take D. Johnson and the ability to lock up our superstars over any linebacker Dallas has to give or for an extra late round pick.
This is about making the best out of a bad economic situation. We just cannot afford to pay top dollar to three defensive ends.
I hate to lose Howard too, but we have to lose him to make our team more competitive in all areas.

I only think it\'s 50/50 he will be there. But if he is we need to make this trade.

I agree, but I think that we need to be compensated for Howard as well. Just because I good LB falls further, doesnt mean we need to lose out totally when we have other options on the table as well.

We are getting compensated for Howard. We would be moving into the top 12 of what most experts will tell you is a 12 deep impact player draft. After the top twelve the level of player really drops in talent level.

Yea, but at the expense of an already established Impact player and a pick only 5 picks later..........

moving up from 16 to 11 is a gain of 250 value points. getting their #42 outright is +480 points.

to get the deal done while dallas was on the clock would mean dallas and howard have ironclad contract terms already hammered out before the draft. that is possible but not likely in the pressure cooker of draft day. i think that is why haz said we\'ll try n get a deal done but if not done before draft day we will go with the 3 de\'s.

i also think cleveland could take dj. there qb? charlie frye or andrew walter at #34 or #67. savage did get a good game managing qb in dilfer who led his previous tem to the superbowl. their pursuit of chester taylor shows me they might be going for a quicker turnaround than some 3 year building plan too. the lowest i see dj is at titans #6 or minny #7 (tice is serious about the defense turnaround and can get a good wideout at #18).

minnesota has been mentioned as a team still in the mix for howard. #16 to #7 is +500 pts, better than dallas\' 2nd. do that move up and throw in a player, say e.j. henderson since he has been moved back on the depth chart, and it\'s a deal.

Not a bad idea....5 spots means a lot

We\'ve waited around so long that the Saints will be lucky to get a first round pick for next year. Dallas knows the Saints are vulnerable now. To me, that franchise tag is looking pretty stupid now. That seven million could be used to ink Deuce or Horn for many more years. If Dallas offered that though, it would be stupid for the Saints not to jump on it.

As much as it makes me salivate to think of McKenzie, Buchannon, Smith, and Bellamy/Mitchell, I don\'t think that Buchannon is going to help us stop the run.

After talking with my friend at the Saints this evening, I have some updates for you.

The Saints were offered Dat straight up for Howard early this week. Apparently there has been some hush hush for this deal, more on Jones part than the Saints.
It seems Dat has no problem playing for the Saints, but if this should happen he wants early notice to prepare for his new team.

The Saints came back with a counter offer. Dat and a #1 pick this year or Dat plus #2 this year and a #2 next year. The Saints are refusing to back off. My friend said that Jones wants the Saints to take a #2 this year and a #5 or 6 next year and no Dat. Or Dat would be a straight up deal.

Also the Browns are calling the Saints but nothing exciting was offered as far as he knew. He mention the Raiders and said the Saints don\'t want to upgrade the CB that way. They are set on a LB position, via draft picks or players and picks.

rumjor from another board--the only reason I post it is because it seems plausable.
