Post mortem 2017 draft

CB Lattamore was a no brainer pick after a rash of offensive picks in the top ten..
OT Rameczk was a value pick .Most gurus had him in the middle of the first rd.Really surprised with pick of OK so early.Tackle depth was more critical than most thought. I am a big fan of picking good big guys and firmly believe that you win tackle to tackle He needs to come in and start to justify this pick.
FS Marcus Williams is quality player who made tons of plays in college gives quality depth and IMHO will win a starting job early.
RB Kamara is the joker back that Payton loves to create matchup with.expect him to catch a lot of screens ,run reverses etc... We have missed this dimension.Cadets days are numbered.Mark him now for your fantasy team.
OLB Anzalone Projects as a Will lb for the Saints.Athletic prototype player who has all the measurable traits Injury risk could be upgrade of healthy. We now have ten LBs on the roster. Special Teams is a place he could shine. Area of need pick.
ŠE Henderson productive at lower level ,great motor ,good measureables could be an effective tool.

I am disappointed that we didn't get a sure thing pass rusher . Otherwise it seems we added quality players at areas of need.
I would be talking to the JETS about Sheldon Richardson.

ŠE Henderson will line up as a LB/DE for your pass rusher. Not a bad draft but
I AM SERIOUSLY WORRIED ABOUT ALL THE INJURY HISTORY.

Re: Post mortem 2017 draft

Lattimore - Most had as the best CB in the draft. Day 1 starter at a need position. Grade A.
Ramczyk - Some had as the top T in the draft. I think between Armstead's injuries and Striefs age, it was a great pick. Grade A.
Williams - In the beginning, he had a first round grade and was in the conversation as the best safety. Ball hawk and leader. Insurance in case Vaccaro leaves or runs afoul of the rules again. Will be on the field a lot regardless. Grade B+.
Kamara - All around RB. Had a first round grade by some. Ingram or Peterson will get nicked up sooner or later. Guy is a play maker. He will get quality touches and will produce. Spent next years pick on him and his role will expand next year. I would have preferred DE Willis though. Grade C+.
Anzalone - Extremely talented. High motor. Brings it. Has never made a tackle he didn't love. Injury concerns on his shoulders. Not good for a LB. Boom or bust player. Grade C+.
Hendrickson - High motor pass rusher. Not the greatest skill, size or strength. Grade C+.
Muhammad - Should have just let someone here make the pick. That pick would have had a better shot at making the roster. Players like OL Bisnowaty, TE Hodges, WR Davis, DT Qualls, WR Coley, DE Rochell, to name a few. Grade F-.

YeA I know! We have way more injury issues on defense than other teams. Especially in the backfield. I would almost pick health over talent at this point just to avoid bad Gris Gris . Maybe some of the coaching changes and ways they work out will help with health but it's been a consistent major problem. Yes every team has injury issues but not in the way we do. There is a reason why all these players at the same position get injured every year. One year ok,'two years a fluke, but after the third year you have to look for the common variable.

I am not concerned with the so called "injury history". In each case they are resolved issues. Yes, Anzalone missed the homeward stretch of last season, but it was with a broken forearm. Big deal. Broken limbs heal stronger than they were to begin with.

Muhammad if coached up to use his hands more and if he can get that needed bend when turning the corner...we could have something with him.

Why not spend a 6th on him. Better than a QB that would never see the field.

Re: Post mortem 2017 draft

The reasons for injuries

College and High School players overload muscles for the amount of bones they have. This leads to them being too large for their bone structure and unable to take on the constant beatings their bones were not designed to take. This makes them injury prone. Happens every year.

And also remember..we don't have the same coaches we did the previous years. Lets give our new ones a chance and see what they can do.

Draft Picks

Round 1: CB Marshon Lattimore, OT Ryan Ramczyk

Round 2: S Marcus Williams

Round 3: RB Alvin Kamara, LB Alex Anzalone, LB Trey Hendrickson

Round 4: None

Round 5: None

Round 6: DE Al-Quadin Muhammad

Round 7: None

It's well-documented that the New Orleans Saints secondary has been atrocious for what seems like a lifetime.

How do you improve it with essentially one pick in a draft? You draft the top cornerback in the entire thing—that's how.

The Saints did just that in getting Marshon Lattimore, who will be the team's top cornerback from day one. There's really not a whole lot of bad things to say about Lattimore.

The Saints' other Round 1 pick, offensive lineman Ryan Ramczyk, wasn't bad, either. A bit of a luxury pick? Sure. New Orleans' offensive line is already pretty good, but Ramczyk will have opportunities to play this year. It is a bit of a weird pick with the clock ticking on quarterback Drew Brees, but it's not terrible.

Adding Marcus Williams to their secondary is also another quality addition. Williams is probably a safety I'd play with two deep safeties as he does have a tendency to be faked out by some quarterbacks, but he should be fine if asked to be by himself. He is a heck of a playmaker with great ball skills. While he doesn't deliver any crushing blows, he does get the job done tackling.

With three picks in the third round, the Saints invested in some linebacking help with Alex Anzalone and Trey Hendrickson—a position the Saints definitely needed more depth to.

Alvin Kamara was an interesting pick and will add to a three-headed monster in the backfield consisting of himself, Adrian Peterson and Mark Ingram, though he'll likely be primarily used in a pass-catching role.

Al-Quadin Muhammad has some off-field baggage, including an arrest, but he should serve as a decent part-time, pure pass-rusher for the Saints—a position they definitely needed to improve via the draft.

Beefing up the defense and making the offense a bit more dynamic were things the Saints needed to do, and they did so with six picks in the first three rounds.
