2017 Saints Rookie Mini-Camp May 12-14

Alright, alright, alright...Saints have a Rookies Mini Camp scheduled next week, Friday through Sunday, May 12-14...

We've got UDRFA (Undrafted Rookie Free Agent) and RFFA (Restricted/Futures Free Agent) coming into town for evaluation.

Who do you want to see make an impression, to get extended a contract, and to receive a legitimate shot at making this roster?

Re: 2017 Saints Rookie Mini-Camp May 12-14

Okay, I'll start... Saints RFFA DT Justin Zimmer, Ferris State; 6' 3", 295 lbs...

Freakish athlete from same small school as Saints WR Jake Lampmann...

Loved this prospect since last year's draft - was p/o'd when we threw all our lower picks away to move up for twice for Payton's two-for-one buys; well, if we'd just waited on Vonn Bell or taken the next best safety, we still would've had the picks for Onyemata and Zimmer...

Sigler has a great profile, analysis of DT Justin Zimmer...

Damn Zimmer is strong. Gotta wonder if they can develop him. Great pick up by the Saints. That kid has some serious power.

Another take on why I'd like to Zimmer make the jump and win a spot at the 3Tech is our depth chart could look like this Week 1...

Now you can spell move Ony outside full-time as he auditioned last season, keeping an older Jordan fresher...

You'd have two terrific athletes in Rankins and Zimmer at the 3 tech tackle really disrupting the active gap...

Fairley has shown his impact is made in bursts on passing downs and despite a torn labrum, Davison was beast on run downs...

And you could have three different quality pass rushers to interchange in Okafor, Hendrickson and Kikaha on the weakside...

DEFENSE

DE (2) 94 - Cameron Jordan, 93 - David Onyemata

DT (2) 98 - Sheldon Rankins, 92 - Justin Zimmer

NT (2) 95 - Tyeler Davison, 90 - Nick Fairley

DE (2/3) 97 - Alex Okafor, 99 -Trey Hendrickson (R3, P103), 44 - Hau'oli Kikaha

Practice Squad:

00 -Al-Quadin Muhammad (R6, P196)
96 - Ashaad Mabry

Trade? or third pass rusher to regain value?

44 - Hau'oli Kikaha

At this point, anything we get from Kikaha is lagniappe after 3 ACLs.

Agreed. Kikaha should've been moved last season when we were going full into the 4-3 and took Sheldon Rankins...

The OT on that play uses a completely ****ty technique. The push and pull is still all right but it won't be that easy in the pros.

Agreed. Him, Swann, and Williams just don't have the bodies. It's a shame because they have talent and give 110%.

I know Darion is a long shot but it's an opportunity to showcase his talents for other teams as well.

I may be wrong but I believe that even though he has potential as a role playing DE he is a better fit as a 3-4 LB'er. Some team might see a little value in him and trade for a conditional pick.

Get to know the New Orleans Saints rookie class: From Alex Anzalone to Marcus Williams | NOLA.com

Trey Hendrickson is another guy I can't wait to see in camp.

Side note - one kid that I'll pay close attention to is Anzalone. I don't trust the health. My spider senses tell me he could be another Ellerbe, but then again he could become Ellerbe (stud when healthy) ;).

He hasn't had a problem with the shoulders in a few years. His only other issue was the broken forearm. That could have happened to anyone. I wouldn't include that in your concerns. Shoulders, maybe. Last year's arm. No.

Just my opinion, the Saints run a base 4-3 but they line up in the 3-4 often enough to make Kikaha worth keeping as a OLB. I love the high motor guys and his 4 forced fumbles were outstanding.

Undrafted rookie guard Collin Buchanan from Miami (Ohio) initially signed with the Saints but opted to leave the team before the start of rookie minicamp. Sean Payton said they spent some time talking in his office Friday. "He felt pretty confident he didn't want to play anymore," Payton said. "So that happens from time to time. And I told him this, and it's the truth really, it's not for everyone. He was just one of those players that felt like he was ready to get on with (what's) next."

Kind of interesting. This guy is a defensive end and they're going to sign him as a guard.
