Costly exit clauses
The Saints have a 90-day window after the 2005 season during which they can leave New Orleans by paying the exit penalty. The state can terminate the deal after the 2007 season and not make the final three years of payments. If the exit clauses are dropped, it would effectively eliminate the team as a candidate to relocate to Los Angeles, where National Football League Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has said he hopes to field a team by 2008 or 2009. "That's something we can negotiate," Benson said of the out clauses. "It's up to the governor and her people; it's not up to us." Benson originally set deadlines of Feb. 1 and March 1 to reach a new agreement. In each case, he dropped the deadline to afford more time for discussions. "We're ready," Benson said. "We told them, 'Hey, give us a new stadium or a renovated Superdome, or just tell us to leave.' Those are the three choices. That's where we're at. We can't keep going on like this. It's ruining us." There's much more to the story... Here's the link... http://www.nola.com/saints/t-p/index...5761858860.xml |
