Taken from another board:

California's biggest sports talk guy, Lee Hacksaw Hamilton reported as his #1 story a "major rumor out of Oakland" claiming the Raiders are trying to trade for Howard and have offered Phillip Buchanon straight up. Hacksaw's been pretty accurate (100% by my count) on "rumors coming out of Oakland", so I would tend to give this one a little more credence than any of the Internet rumors.

In my opinion, I don't see how the Raiders have the cap room to deal a guy in his rookie contract for Howard who's carrying a $7M+ cap number... but if Hacksaw's now behind this, this rumor might finally have some bite to it.

not a big buchannon fan. it would sound better with a 2nd thrown in. theoretically i am for moving howard for a 3rd rd or anything worth as much or more rather than keeping him at the franchise tag rate.

I was high on Buchannon out of the draft, but not so sure now. He can definitally help. Maybe better than Fakhir but would be a solid nickle DB at worst. But I wouldnt give up Howard for just a 3rd or 2nd CB. Throw in a 3rd or a conditional pick next year and im good.

I agree that if they were to throw in a pick this would be great. I\'m not sure player for player is fair compensation but letting go of Howard for nothing is even worse. We need value for value.

Thats a keeper.
We get a comparable player.
The combo of Buchanon, McKenzie, Brown, Craft, and Thomas has to be near the top of best secondaries in the league.
It allows us to NOT draft a CB.
It makes LB much more likely to be addressed now.
It will make our pass rush that much better. How many times did you see Grant/Howard/Smith/Young come within a half-second of a sack only to see it completed on Ambrose/Thomas? I think the 2005 version of our DB\'s may give the D-line that extra second to pummel the QB.

I am. If for no other reason the cap relief. PB is a playmaker, we could use the extra turnovers he will help create. The cap space would allow us to bring in more help, ala Rob Morris. Plug him in the middle, move Watson back outside to his natural postion.
