Vonn Bell Stat

What did they say about him pre-draft? Let's take a look at NFL.com's draft profile...

Quote:

Against the run, allows running backs to get on top of him and deliver the first blow. Drag down tackler without much thud.
Quote:

You can't play him around the line of scrimmage, but he's got instincts in coverage." -- AFC scout
Quote:

Bell lacks size and isn't an aggressive tackler so he needs to prove he can run so that he locks in his draft positioning as one of the top free safeties in this draft.

It seems as though his draft evaluation was the complete opposite of what happened, it seems his ball hawking skills need work but his tackling is on point.

Vonn showed flashes but there were rookie mistakes. I think this was a good draft selection and he has the skill set to become a very good safety.

Side note - the last analyst was way off target ... Vonn is already an above average tackler. You can see he was well coached in college by the way he approaches the defender at the point of contact/chin up.

He was downright lost in zone coverage at times. That was pretty unexpected. By all accounts though he very quickly took over as the leader of the defense and he's making the pre-snap adjustments. I think he very quickly gained Dennis Allen's trust so I'm expecting a big season from him.

I think the idea this year would be to continue primarily in zone but Coach Allen should mix it up with press due to the current roster. I've seen Breaux succeed (press coverage) at it & I have no doubt Lattimore can get there because his make up speed is ridiculous.

Press man = a pass rush that can eventually arrive with bad intentions. But back to Vonn... I'm high on him, exceptional football IQ & he's tough.

I know it's premature but he could make KV expendable. He has a similar skill set with a higher ceiling. He may not be as good in the box but the SS needs to be more flexible than say Roman Harper(who I love).

Personally, after constantly watching the 'Beast Quake' run of 2011 until I physically get ill, I'll take a player who can TACKLE any day of the week! Because all of the "ball hawks" couldn't close that playoff game. Never again....
End of story!

Completely agree. I didn't want to bring it up because there's a lot of Vaccaro love (which is understandable). If we can actually field 3 good CB's and we have an upgrade at Sam LB like AJ Klein... Where does Vaccaro fit in? If the 3 safety sets become less of a necessity because we have the personnel to do other things I'm just not sure what we do.

It is called depth. Something that killed us with a great offense last season. If we had quality depth on the defensive side of the ball we would have made the playoffs easily.

Yes depth is great. But with Vaccaro's contract almost up do we pay him $6-8 million/year to be depth?

I don't think Vaccaro warrants the kind of money Chris XVI is talking about. He is a tough guy but for that kind of money you have to be able to make interceptions and demonstrate great cover skills which I think he does not bring. If he finds a team that will give him that kind of money I would let him walk.

Oh, he'll walk! Right to Atlanta or Carolina!

I'm not the biggest KV fan but that isn't the type of safety he is. His position as a strong safety is blitzing off the line, nickle formations & move/hybrid type player.

I can't wait to see what Marcus Williams can do, the guy looks like an incredible athlete.

That is something that is needed in as many three safety sets as we employ. That just gives us another variation of the nickel. We can either go with three safeties or three CB's now depending upon the personnel of our opponent. We'll have three front line players at each discipline (Vacarro, Bell, M Williams and Breaux, PJ Williams, Lattimore).
