What defensive scheme should the Saints employ to get on this list?

NFL1000: Ranking the Best Defensive Schemes | Bleacher Report discusses 10 effective modern defensive schemes.

What would be the Saints scheme that would put them on this list next offseason?

Note that the Saints do employ at least one of the schemes (The Big Nickel) on a regular basis.

I wasn't able to locate an overview or film study of Allen's scheme for the 2016 season. The best I could do was this piece from the 2016 offseason:

https://whodatwarriors.com/2016/05/2...ensive-scheme/

As training camp and preseason is upon us, I'm interested in what I should be evaluating in terms of a scheme that can improve the defensive results since 2013.

I was going to point you to that same article. I found it a while back when I was wondering the same thing. I really don't think Allen has a set defensive scheme. He basically does the same thing on defense that Payton does on offense. He schemes to his player's strengths. when he's got the right personnel out there he'll bring pressure from all over. That's a reason why I am so excited about the new speed we have at LB and the quality depth of the secondary.

We added to the defense and are getting so many players back it is hard to guess.

Guido is right and DA is stumped himself

if i was to guess one position above all others will determine what we favor

FS - Single High safety look might be the main look. like Seattle runs. Will a FS step up? My money is on The Marcus Williams impact. not sold on Vonn Bell still.

We'll see? Really can't get much lower than we've been for years no matter what scheme we run.

BINGO! Actually there's a related article on PFF about pass coverage... PFF: Taking a closer look: Examining the NFL's coverage scheme tendencies

Saints employ different coverage schemes (e.g. Cover-0, Cover-2, Man-to-Man) vs other teams...

Sean Payton is all about disguise and deception; I'd expect that philosophy to spill over to the defensive side of the ball...

Only issue I see with that is that defensive players have to read/react faster to stay with offensive skill players to make plays, tackles...

So it takes not only fast, quick players, but really instinctive ones too; and as Hagan pointed out, we're getting guys back and adding talent...

At the end of the day, good coaches like Payton, will assess the assets and liabilities of his personnel and deploy them to maximize success, minimize failure...

Dennis Allen is learning too; and it's on him to make the leap as a coach and not be stagnant in scheme/thinking, but take what he's got and make it work...

And judging from last season, there were several games that the Saints made terrific halftime adjustments and really put the clamps on teams at times...

DA will get even better with his new staff additions...

Rob Ryan operated totally opposite of that strategy forcing square pegs into round holes. He had his strict scheme and was going to use it whether the players were capable or not. That led to the defensive disasters of 2014-15. Dennis Allen finally had total control last year but was hamstrung by the rash of injuries. The personnel not only changed constantly from game to game, sometimes it changed from half to half with players falling like flies.

Which ever one best fits the personnel the Saints have on the roster.

For a change.

The "Let's Stop The Other Team From Scoring and Protect The Lead The Offense Built" scheme.

I'm pretty sure we use all of them off and on, as most teams do.

The list is simply base defenses. No team stays in the same scheme all game long.

Danno,

I wasn't specifically saying the Saints needs to use one of the schemes on the list. It's more a question of what scheme will they likely use and will that scheme make the list for next year.

I think Seahawks should be at 1 instead of 3.

Their D was more innovative than Denvers. I mean come on.
