I've held the opinion all off-season that our two best acquisitions were Mike Nolan and Curtis Johnson. Both have strong reputations coaching their position groups, and frankly, just having ANYONE other than Vitt coaching the linebackers would have been reason for at least some optimism. The guy just didn't develop players.

It looks like Nolan is getting the linebackers to be more aggressive, and they look like they actually know what to do, instead of looking like paper bags floating in the wind.

As for Curtis Johnson, you can see the effect he's already had on Tommylee Lewis. He made exciting plays in the preseason last year, but clearly lacked polish in the receiving game. I wasn't sure at all he'd make the team this year. After what I've seen early on this year, he looks FAR more polished and confident. The athleticism was always there. He could be a real weapon this year.

Fast. I saw speed at LB tonight...first time in 13 forevers.

Oh, and you could tell the LB's are much better coached at the position. The LB's will end up being the strength of the defense. I saw them as beasts in the coverage teams, too.

In the 2016 preseason the Saints defense gave up 100 points, or 25 points a game.

In the 2015 preseason the Saints defense gave up 131 points, or 30.3 points a game.

Halfway through the 2017 preseason our defense has given up 10 points per game.

Yep, preseason is annoying and largely meaningless, but when something stands out, especially contrasted with those recent preseason numbers, it is reason for optimism.

Look until Manti admits she was a fantasy I ain't getting off poop. I know he's a Saint and pretty good at that but he needs to be reminded reality is a lot better than fantasy.

Catfishing is a little different than fantasy although they both have a lot to do with wishful thinking. Granted, he should have been a little wiser about the whole internet romance thing. I run into youngsters all the time who get sucked in by this.

I am not convinced Joe Vitt always had a lot to work with, but I do believe Nolan is an upgrade. The bad free agents signings and draft picks cannot really be pinned all on Vitt.

There is no one we rib more than people we love. Do it with our families, our good friends, and when I was in the military it was another way of building camaraderie.

I thought Teo would be a great player in this league when he came in and I think a change of scenery and coaching is what he needs to take it to the next level.
I did however question his intelligence after the cat fishing ordeal. This is a kid who grew up in the era of the internet. We all remember what it was like before internet and had no idea what it would develop into. He had his entire life to learn how to function in a society driven by the web. I've done plenty of internet dating and so have a lot of people I know. You can see cat fishing coming a mile away.
He's not some lonely middle school introvert emo who only lives in internet world.
I'm guessing he went into it blindly accepting anything he was told and read and was so busy thinking "positively" about his situation that he forgot to cover his ass. It's a naive way of going about life and could wind up getting one hurt or greatly taken advantage of.
He's older now and I'm sure wiser. He also seems to be a hell of a football player and the better he gets at it the more the players are going to rip him for it. It will be out of respect because they know he's a man and can take it.

that's definitely how men are. and the thing is when you're saying it with a compliment on how well they played it is clearly meant for those purposes.i dont think anyone on here has done anything but spoke positively about his play so definitely these are fun upbeat posts. I am thankful to come here and have people like cherm and some others that make me laugh while we all support our team.

6. I know the Chargers are weak. They cant get up, because they play in a corporately named minor league soccer field. And soon, they'll play in a Disney-fied HomoDome. The Chargers will not win, until they move somewhere cold. BUT this is two weeks in a row, the Browns 1st 2 and Chargers 1st 3- were 3 and outs. The worst this can be is baby steps.... Last 3 years, even bad offenses torched us. Personally, I got a big Schwingy watching this game.

Exactly. Not the job of anyone on this board to go around telling other people how to act here, except Halo, and I have been here for 13 years because people are able to express their opinion about the saints and laugh while doing it. I have never been to any other Saints board, but from what I hear the constant complaining about people's posts and jokes about players or the team is a constant somewhere else. Don't think we need that here.

Uhhh, Mike... You might want to go back and read the rest of what I said, my friend. You missed pretty much the whole context of what I said. The games mean nothing, because the outcome is meaningless. Without Preseason games, these guys would simply have more scrimmages, and be judged just the same as they are now. That's how it works in high school and college. Preseason is about money for owners.

But I have always said, and will always say that as long as we ARE playing these games, what the individual players do, matters. Not as much as in the regular season, because of competition factors, but we can at least form some general opinions on players when they really stand out, good or bad. I just posted something to this effect in another thread.

december 23rd. You do know there used to be SIX preseason games?

I've suggested this before, but here's my idea about preseason, and its brilliant.

Play the preseason games in secondary cities, like we did in Shreveport and Jackson. The season tix holders dont have to pay for preseason games. I went to the last Shreveport game, it they treated it like a Super Bowl there, with a complete carnival all around it, and tons of hype.
It was crazy and fun, and brought a lot of $$$ into town. It wasnt meaningless to those people. The Saints had come to their town. The team leaves with stronger fans, much like the old NFL barnstorming tours of the 30s.

You need preseason, and all the Pierre Thomas's of football, the undrafted guys, the rehab guys, the waiver wire, practice squad guys-- would all tell you THEY need it. And the brilliant coaches who pick Marques Colston in the 7th round will too. And a whole lot of secondary cities, like San Antonio, Milwaukee, Jackson, etc. would jump at the chance to host an NFL preseason game. The teams grow a deeper bond w/ their distant fans. everybody wins.
