sportingnews on smith
As a free agent, Dwight Smith tried to sell himself as a cornerback, but he was signed by the Saints as a safety. The Bucs, his former team, also liked him more as a safety. Smith has the speed and ball skills to play corner, but he doesn't have ideal fluidness for the position. He certainly is physical enough to play safety, which is one of the reasons he appealed to Saints coach Jim Haslett. The Saints also hope Smith can provide takeaways. Over the past two seasons, Smith had eight interceptions--three more than all of the Saints' safeties combined. And if injuries hit, the Saints always can move Smith to corner.
