Armando Salguero, of the Miami Herald, reports the Miami Dolphins have made it clear to other teams they are open to receiving offers for the No. 2 pick overall, which would allow them to trade down and acquire additional draft choices.

I don\'t think we should trade up for him or anyone else in this draft. If anything, I think we\'d be better trading back five or six spots.

I disagree, if Howard can be dealt for a 2nd rounder or packaged into the deal. Move our 16th and an extra 2nd rounder for the best LB in the draft, and still have another 2nd rounder?? I\'ll take those odds.

It just sounds too good to me. Though I\'d LOVE to see DJ on here, I just don\'t think it\'ll happen. And I\'m not setting myself up for another heartbreak.

Why? I don\'t think the finances would work.

Number 2 overall picks are going to demand massive contracts. And as it is, we\'re tight on the cap.

How much would a Howard trade free up? Was it 8 mil?

We\'ll need everything the trade would free up just to get regular picks signed and the veterans\' contract extensions. DJ\'s agent would likely want too much of that cap space if he went at number 2 overall.

On another note, we have the following glaring need positions: LB, SS, OT, and backup QB. What if we traded down? If we were to trade down from 16, (and complete the Howard trade as well), then we might be able to get --high end-- talent for all of those need positions (instead of just some of those positions). I\'m thinking a vet at LB via the Howard trade, then late round 1/early round 2 guys at OT, SS, and QB via draft picks.

Man, talk about a makeover. I think we\'d be really competitive after a turnaround like that.

Where is LK when we need him, we need a value chart. what would it take to move to #2 overall. im thinkin our 1st,2nd, and 3rd rdr.

Niners were looking to trade down .

Kinda tells you something about the quality of the number 1 selection and how much it will cost to sign it .

LOL Fireman...

they all wanna trade down- SF, Mia, Cleve, Tenn, etc. Why? as good as those guys are at the top they most arent worth or are too risky for what contract obligation they will require. More quantity of lower picks in this draft will be a lot better than a few upper echelon ones. Miami is in a bind. They have only 5 total picks and but 2 on day one, no 2nd rounder. I do think they might even trade down and \"give\" value to get more picks.

Miami could have no interest in Howard being stacked with DE\'s already.

Bad news for anyone imagining getting to #2. All of the Saints picks together add up to 1783 points. Miami\'s #2 alone is worth 2600. So, if you tossed in Howard, counting him as a mid 1st rounder at 800-900 points, then it might be an even deal. Think it could happen? Nu uh, me neither.

bookmark your draft pick value chart LOL

If we traded up-i would want it to be for something other than DJ...like alex smith or baron...

I say blow the team up..get high draft picks-get baron, smith then work on defense...if we suck next year-o well..the next great OT is coming out and some better linebackers..

Hell give them Howard and we get the #2 pick and they can have #16. At least we get something before draft day for Howard because if we wait we might not get anything and have alot less money to spend if we have to keep him. Dallas is also interested in trading down from #11 and they want Howard. What in the hell is the holdup on this deal anyway?

Howard and our pick for the number 2 isn\'t anywhere close to being fair.

every draft it seems someone falls farther than they should who might do that this draft, might derrick johnson drop to the lions.

NOLAN NAWROCKI
Johnson could easily fall to the Lions. He\'s an incredible athlete and covers like a defensive back, but when it comes to taking on blocks, he disappears, cringes and avoids contact. With some big bodies in front of him in Detroit, he would be an excellent fit, the same way Brian Urlacher was for Dick Jauron in Chicago. To answer your question, offensive players will dominate the top 10 and Antrel Rolle should be the top defender, so there\'s a good chance Johnson could be there at No. 10.
this is what scout\'s inc had to say about DJ....seems to be pretty consistent with everything else that\'s out there.

If we could get him around #10, then he\'d be a good value that we could probably afford in my book. I\'d consider it.

But the original point of trading up to #2 to get him just doesn\'t seem viable. It\'s too high, more than we can afford (both in $$, cap hit, and lost picks).

We mustn\'t forget that LB is not our only glaring need.

#16 and #40 gets up to #7 overall in value. i am a big dj fan but i do not think there is enough diff in him and burnett, blackstock, thurman, etc. to go to the 3rd rd for a next pick. i\'d rather a trade down and get 2 of those other lb\'s!

I think I agree with you, LKel.

With so many teams wanting to trade down, and the draft being weak at the top it may be one of those years where teams have to settle for less if they want to trade down.

Last year, trading down would bring much more than it will this year. If we want DJ bad enough, and I think we do, this is the year to do it. Might be able to move up for only a 3rd rounder if so many teams keep desiring to trade down. The value charts aren\'t gonna fit well this year.

Loomis is allegedly a contract guru. In fact its the only reason he\'s here. If he can\'t work out a deal to fit DJ in, who can? What might we have to do? Cut somebody? Horn perhaps? Donte?

I can think of 5 or 6 guys named LB we can cut and not hurt us one bit.

Add a couple of tight ends to that.

Im sorry, but I see a huge difference from DJ to the others. DJ is a turnover machine, the guy practically patented a turnover manuever. I see DJ as a playmaker, the others I see as strong players. Now tell me if I\'m wrong here, but I think the reason our defense has been lacking is due to the fact we dont have a playmaker. Lets do a little breakdown shall we?

Derrick Johnson-Texas
458 tackles, 10 1/2 sacks, 5 fumble recoveries, 11 fumbles caused and 9 interceptions. Also had 1 blocked kick, and had 30 pass deflections. All around player

Shawn Merriman-Maryland
189 tackles, 22 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, 3 fumble recoveries, 0 ints, mostly a rush-end or OLB

Darryl Blackstock-Virginia
237 tackles, 27 sacks, 4 recovered fumbles, 2 forced fumbles, 1 int and 8 deflected. Mostly a pass rusher.

Odell Thurman- ^%$ing Georgia
186 tackles, 9.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 3 recovered fumbles, 2 ints and 6 pass deflections. Smaller linebacker, 3 inches shorter than DJ

Now, i kno we all had the debate of how stats dont make a player, but cmon, he definatly has a wider variety of stats than the other LB\'s. Ints, passes deflected, that kind of stuff, he is an all over the field type of guy. Sideline to Sideline player, something that we need damnit. We dont want out LB\'s only rushing the QB, thats what our \"supposed\" awesome D-Line is supposed to do. Our LB\'s are supposed to 1. stop running backs 2. Deflect passes 3. Cover TE\'s and slants. then 4. Pass rush. Our D-Line will generate the pass rush, we just need someone to clog the middle once the RB runs past our line. Cmon guys, its a no-brainer

If there was ONE player I wouldn\'t mind over-spending for, it\'s Derrick Johnson.
#2 overall may be too high for him salary wise. But when its all said and done, is there a monstrous difference in a #2 and a #6?.
I could go either way. Reach for this superstar or stay put and get a couple quality guys.

I wouldn\'t wanna move to 2 for DJ, but if we could get him at 6-10, I am all for trading up for him. And if he is there for Dallas at 11, we HAVE to do something.

11 would be ideal. Dallas & Howard, there\'s no way we could let him fall past 11.

But... that\'s just setting myself up for heartbreak. I won\'t do that.

I don\'t know how high I would be willing to move up, but I want to see this guy in black and gold. Last year we all wanted Vilma and we missed out. Vilma went on to play real well last year. I think DJ is going to do the same this year. If we don\'t go out and get him we all will we watching him and saying to ourselves, boy he could be doing that for us.
