Has anyone checked the actual rule about the anthem? NFL’s game operations manual is very specific
The rules, as stated on pages A62-63 of the league’s*game operations manual:
The National Anthem must be played prior to every NFL game, and all players must be on the sideline for the National Anthem. During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition. It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses. All I read is "...field and bench area should stand at attention"
and "Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem may result in discipline" Words like "should" and "may" are compulsory terms. Meaning they are essential, yet they are NOT mandatory. So it's up to teams and NFL to enforce fines and penalties, but Roger Goodell and the NFL owners have made it very clear they will not enforce desecration of the flag by employees of the NFL. Yet those who tried to honor the victims up 9/11 by wearing special socks, shoes, etc. were threatened with heavy fines. Consider Bounty Gate, for example, among so many other rules and regulations the NFL has invented in recent times. How many of those rules are EVER enforced with regularity or in fairness??? Bountygate itself is an example of the NFL ONLY enforcing rules where it can gain PR that boost it's case to make settlement with NFL players union and retired players to show it wants to help football player targeting injuries. |

It's exactly his selective enforcement of the rules that makes him a joke...

Here's my 10 cent idea:
Players may choose to participate (stand and show proper reverence) or stay in the locker room. If you choose to stay in the locker room, you will be fined $25,000 per incident and that fine will be distributed amongst charities such as disabled American veterans, wounded warriors, boys and girls clubs, etc. I think that it's only fair when the NFL fine players for the wrong socks, throwing balls into the stands, celebrations, and other minor "protests". This would allow the protesting players to actually make a difference in the lives of others instead of being a national spectacle for their own self promotion. |
