Assorted Draft Notes N Thoughts
It is anticpated to be one of the most fluid drafts in recent history. Most Every team wants to move down. Here's my take-
SF- would like to trade but will have a hard time finding a trade partner. The first 3 picks go down 400pts per pick which is equivalent to a #50 pick to move one notch. They have narrowed their choice down to the 2 qb's and edwards. so it is a 2/3 chance that they will take a player that not too many teams are hot after. they stay and take rodgers. MIA- no 2nd rd pick so would like to get one in trade. surtain may end up bringing that. there could be harsh competition to get the spots that will get edwards or mike williams. i see that as the strongest demand at the top. more likely no trade. ronnie brown looks pretty sure here otherwise. CLEV- i believe there will be at least 2 trades in the top 10 picks. the browns are probably more likely to trade than stand pat. savage and crennel have already started major remodeling. i have yammered about the vikes overhauling their porous defense. cleveland is trying much the same. having the worst run d in the league they got rid of the entire defensive line. 11 players who started at least one game on defense are gone. the needs are so great and widespread they can move down, get some extra picks, and still get vital players. i would forecast the vikings to trade here since edwards and williams will probably both be gone by their #7 selection. TB- no trading. mike williams across the field from clayton will for a dynamic duo for a longtime- unless williams is gone. i dunno if gruden is as jazzed about edwards. if not m. williams i think benson. defintiely a fuller nfl back than cadillac. CHI- similar to TB. edwards, m. williams, and benson should go in the 3-4-5 picks with a cleveland trade, it is just to be seen what order they shake out. TN- i think the titans are the other most likely team to trade down of the top 10. they lost so many players that their needs are many. with the top 2 wr's gone the trade partners will dimish tho. n.o. actually isn't a bad fit to get derrick johnson here. if tn is stuck here they could replace one rolle with another. considering an heir for mcnair is possible if rodgers or smith is still available. volek is 29. MIN- in my projection cleveland could trade down here and still get alex smith. plenty of good defensive players for romeo to choose from here too. minny with no trade will get a de and wr at the #7 &18 spots. it is just a matter of which one they project as better value and more likely at each selection. ARZ- alex smith could fall here and almost be a forced pick. another trade possibility team. i think they will end up with travis henry so cadillac might slide on by. if no trade the top ranked cb on the board probably fits. WASH- losing champ bailey and fred smoot makes this look like the second cb pick in the draft to me. if they grade wr's williamson or clayton high enough maybe. DET- looks like an easy best defensive player available pick. 2nd or 3rd ranked cb, dj, merriman, whoever is there. DAL- talking about moving down too. if dj is here and howard deal is not done n.o. would be crazy to not do howard and #16 for this pick and a 2006 2nd rd. if boys pick here: with howard obtained, a cb or wr. no howard a sackmeister. SD- a team that could afford to move up and grab edwards or m. williams. if staying here, williamson or a edge rusher. HOU- alex barron looks like a clear shot for them here. they showed how bad they wanted help going after pace. the drop they may not be able to pass up is cadillac williams. CARO- wr or ot, williamson or jammal brown look like players to decide on in my scenario. KC- best d on the board. even if getting surtain another corner could help. might choose from the top 3 de's too. so it comes to the saints with no incredible drops into their lap. the 3rd or 4th ranked cb could be there. thomas davis whether ss or lb as well. first choice of another dt is an option. khalif barnes or jammal brown would be cornerstone picks, one should be there. do they stretch burnett up to be the 2nd lb chosen? trade up for dj? try to obtain a pick trading down for a lb? most of those would be solid and workable picks to me. 13 days and counting and who do you predict they will choose though? here's mine- marcus johnson, guard from ole miss. they are wowed by his athleticism and take him here when he might have been still on the board at #40. he moves to right tackle and allows mayberry back inside. who do you say? |

1. KALIEF BARNES.
I think they like his LT potential, and although I think Mayberry would be fine at RT, this pick allows Mayberry to play his pro-bowl position OG. Its like getting two players for one. Barnes to RT, Mayberry to guard. 2. Thomas Davis-the more I read about him the more I like him. He is a football player. I don\'t care whether its SS or OLB. He\'d excell at both. Think of a much faster, bigger Sammy Knight. 3. Trade up for DJ. This ALL depends on all the expected movement. I think the Saints would trade up into the 5-10 range, but no higher. If the dominos fall just right look for them to trade up. 4. BPA. While we all base our guesses on our needs, the Saints may smiply pick the best player available on their board. Could be a stud at a position we really don\'t necessarily need desperately. Maybe a CB, or WR, or TE, or even a RB. It depends on which top 10 talent slips to 16. About the only thing I\'d be disappointed in is if we picked a WR (unless its Edwards or Williams) or a DE. Wouldn\'t mind a late pick on a DE that needs a couple years of seasoning though. What I hope we get... LB (OLB or ILB) DT OT QB CB LB (ILB or OLB) SS |

I tell ya what....people don\'t be shocked if we are sitting at 16, Ced Benson is still on the board and we grab him. Think about it....Deuce has a contract year coming up. Benson is considered to be the best RB in the draft by many. Benson is also considered to be a better prospect this year than Deuce was in 01. They could see a future opportunity to franchise Deuce and trade him, much like the situation with Howard this year. It would not shock me one bit to see this happen.

i think cadillac could fall further than benson. down to houston at the lowest tho as i pointed out.
alex smith probably has arizona as a bottom, but if not there, no tellingow far he could drop. |
