PFF: Interior Defender Grades
Rankins needs to step up as a first round pick, Onyemata, taken in the fourth, and Davison, taken in the fifth, are right there with him... LR Grade Player 35 81.3 Sheldon Rankins 37 81.1 David Onyemata 39 80.7 Tyeler Davison |
Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
Sheldon's doing some great things. He's just having to face most of the double teams because we don't have an impactful NT.

Rankins... And with the stellar play we've gotten from the Defensive Ends - Jordan, Hendrickson, Okafor, gotta believe as a Top 15 pick, Rankins should have better production? To see Rankins ranked below guys like Akiem Hicks and Al Woods is a real head scratcher... Look, he's playing and starting as a first round pick, as he should, I'm just asking if we could've gotten the same production from a third round pick? |
Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
On a another note, former UDFA and FA signee from the Browns LB Craig Robertson drew this praise from PFF:
New Orleans Saints: Linebacker Craig Robertson has an average depth of tackle of 1.8 yards past the line of scrimmage. That is the lowest for any linebacker with ten or more tackles this season. |

Not that PFF is the end all, be all, but their criticism of Rankins is that while his play is solid, he's not taking full advantage on some plays as he could and should, which is why I'm asking y'all's take because I feel I'd like to see more production on the 13th pick of the draft... Guess Lattimore and Ramczyk has set the bar high now for Saints' first round picks... |
Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
Keep seeing that third name on that pictograph and can't help but recall a few people, including Hagan, who wanted Harrison...
If SP and the Mickster had put Fairley through a physical before extending him to that kind of money, we may have had the time, resources to get the Big Snacks... |
Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
The did give him a physical didn't they?
Either way he always had a heart condition that could become a issue any time. Can't blame them for it happening after so many years of playing without a issue. |
Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
Could do with some real mass on that line
Most our our guys are 300-320lb max. A Wilfork/Harrison type especially when they shift to a 3 man front. Dont think anyone we have is big enough to hold the middle alone. Don't want to get in them to much though and they are in general keeping thst pocket closed and stopping people escaping the edge pressure |
Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
Sheldon was not drafted to be the anchor in the middle. It is not in his skill set. Never was. He is a disruptor that needs to be freed up. He is a piece to the solution not the corner stone to make it all work.
So far no one has stepped up to anchor the middle and take over the corner stone role of the defense. The saints someone to do the dirty work of taking on double teams, holding their gap and yet the skills to play off double teams and still stop the run. Not an easy player to find. A proven veteran with this skill set already is perfect and why I am :deadhorse2:for DaQuan Jones DT/DE Titians 6036 322 5.35 #90 R4 2014 - $3/4 M He has filled this role for years as a 34DE and was ranked as the 16th best DL against the run in 2016. That will go up once he no longer asked to provide an out side pass rush. He manged this also by being pegged as a two down run stopper. He is a 3 down 43DT all game long eating up blockers, plugging gaps and pushing the pocket. Break your protest for one week and watch the respect teams give DaQuan Jones of the Titian. I have been keeping an eye on him since he was drafted. He owns his gap and the gaps of others. He is a beast just beating up on offensive linemen. This is the player type Sheldon rankings needs next to him so he can be all he can be. Jordon and the LBs will also benefit from a player like this. Glamor stats are nice but its the guy who does all the dirty work that goes unnoticed that makes it all possible for others to dance over the QB The saints need a cornerstone to build upon not more window dressings on the DL. |

I agree then. I like Fairley but wanted Harrison far more |
Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
If Fairley comes back will he be any good?

Bump ...

Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
Rankins looked the part today.
Looked like a TE on that INT. |
Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
I'm pretty sure Rankins got the message!

Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
Can the SAINTS get and AWESOME!!!!!

Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
Well, this is what I was expecting from the No. 13 pick...
Won't back off my previous criticism because it was deserved... But the way he played today, now opponents have to account for Jordan, Hendrickson, Okafor, and now Rankins... Now about that Onyemata fella... |
Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
Don't know about those Interior Defenders reading all of our fan rants and rages and going-ons...
I'd hope they'd have their arses parked in film room or with their position coach working on technique... But they had to have felt the pressure from their peers to match their efforts on game day... |
Re: PFF: Interior Defender Grades
Still wished we'd sent a fifth (Jags gave a sixth) and then we'd really had the best rotation of DTs in the business...
NT Dareus/Davison with DT3 Rankins/Onyemata Know Dareus play has declined, but that's more to do with scheme and needing a fresh start... And playing with the Drew Brees and the surging Saints would have lit a fire under that guy... |
