We Had An Ugly Game

But anyone who now thinks we suck or who starts calling for Drew's head or starts hollering for Sean's head will get no love from me.

We had a bad game. Let's play that game healthy and see...

Let's get better and take it to Carolina at home next week. Time to start a new streak!

Re: We Had An Ugly Game

I think most here saw there were too many defensive mistakes due to a depleted secondary and an ineffective offense most of the game.

I’ll was bad yes. But not critical. Yet...

Our TE's better wake up second half of the season. Once the Rams closed in on our RB's, our WR's did nothing to counter.

Side note - B&G goggles are off. Kamara is a fantastic RB and subsequent ROY. Electric on any given play.

How did Drew Brees not have a field day, I mean single coverage all day long???

Re: We Had An Ugly Game

Yeah, not our best effort this year, but I look at it a little different than some... aside from the Vikes games the rams have been scoring at will pretty much all year. Gave up 26, not ideal but with our injury situation, they played well enough to give us a chance. Drew didn’t have his best day, but there d played pretty solid. I think we will be fine, road loss to a good team, gonna happen....move on win next week

Brees has never played the wade Phillips defense well, he always gets killed.

Today was particularly ugly, and I'll say the majority of the loss is on him. Defense sucked but did enough to give our offense a shot...

Re: We Had An Ugly Game

Thomas is the primary X WR but we need a big body TE. Fleener isn't that guy. Coleman isn't that type of receiver. Hadn't seen that monster since Jimmy Graham was here.

But yes, Brees had an ugly game.

SP called plays as many feared and tried to pass on a good pass defense...desire to show he could? We went pass heavy from the 1st series. Even while 10 behind we should've been running. Rams run defense not as good.

On D, should've taken a page from posters here and not started D. Harris. PJ and Sterling Moore were obvious to start. Needed to blitz the young QB more, too, when neither CB is 1st string. Duh.

Once going away from what got us here (run) led to the likely conclusion (behind all game), I could believe it when he didn't make the SP patented gamble and try on 4th and goal on the 5 with so little time left. That sealed it.

I think there were two reasons, number 1 we were not having success running minus the big run by Kamara and 2. I think he looked at the success Minny had passing against them.

Truth be told we just got whooped up front today by their dline, and they have a lot of speed on their defense. Plus they were amped for today and chomping at the bit. You could see that and it was probably because of how they were man-handled by Minny. You'd expect or hope that we will have that same type of passion this week at home because of how we played this week.

They won on defense.
They won on offense.
They won on special teams.
We had a bad game.

They played a lot of man defense, stacked for the run and played for the short pass.

Down top three CB
Down starting DE

Held one of the highest scoring teams under 30pts.

Offense sounds like it had a poor game against one of the best fronts in the league.

A bad game

Do you think Brees haven't develop the timing and trust with Ginn or his arm is deteriorating?

Is Sean Payton to trusting in Brees arm or is he just pig headed to run the ball

Do they finally cut Harris and if so will they sign Jalen Collins

Why not activate Muhammad? So many questions I will love to be answered

The O-line does not get a pass. Brees made some dumb throws more than a few times in double and triple coverage but he did not have much time.

Agreed. There was a lot of ugly O-line play out there yesterday. Pretty much all of them got their asses handed to them at one point or another.
They made a ton of good plays too but this was not the best performance of the year for the group.

Re: We Had An Ugly Game

I posted that tweet in another thread. I know a bunch of folks will say stuff like that shouldn't happen, they are pros and all that hoopla. The thing is it still does. You just kinda run out of energy, it is especially prone to happening after a big win like against the Redskins.
And if you have a bad week of practise it will usually show up on sunday.

And losing 2 starting CBs and a DE doesn't help either. The Rams are a good football team and you can't give them any slack at all. We play our worst game since week 2 and are still only a TD away thou, thats a positive.

Re: We Had An Ugly Game

My only point about Drew is it appeared on a couple of the long balls he threw they were well under thrown. It has nothing to do with his accuracy or ability to throw 25 yards.

It is not a matter of calling for anyone's head, it was one game. I would only question Drew on his arm strength, at least on this day. Accuracy, hes is the king.

I thought things would go south when we started out passing. We are not that team anymore. Get back to pounding it and Snead more involved in the slot. Could have totally grinded out a W. The D did enough to keep us in it.

True but damn SP called a bad game. At this level, running the ball (even if it's not successful) has to be established. We obliterate the Bills & didn't nearly run it all first half of the Skins game as we could have. No need to get cute or overthink yourself. Rams were ranked #27th against the run yet on the opening drive we passed 100% of the time.

Kamara was in a zone yet he didn't touch the ball when we were on the goal line. Why not continue to do what's working until it doesn't work anymore? I remember Bill Parcells telling paying that he is "too pass happy" at times back during his OC days up in NY. Same still applied on yesterday.

Play calling was suspect on Sunday.

Re: We Had An Ugly Game

You can't run the ball that much if you are playing behind so much.

Rams played great for starters I think they deserve a lot of credit more than how bad we played. I also noticed how much bigger they are on all levels of the field.

We missed a lot of tackles and over all they were better.

So if you are down 7-0, are you still throwing the ball 100% of the time on the subsequent drive?

It was 10 to nothing pretty quick and we were flat. There was enough runs to keep them honest but it wasn't just us the Rams came to play.

You can blame play calling all you want but when you get out played - nothing beats that.

Even after the 70+ yard TD by that stud Kamara, guess how many more carries he had the entire game? 4.

4 yard dink, screen, screen. C'mon coach, run the ball. This game was never out of hand to the point where you abandon the run. That's coaching.

Now you know good and well the Saints are not going to sign Jalen Collins. He is probably done in the NFL and even if he isn't, he won't get is second chance with the Saints. They are probably stuck with Harris for the foreseeable future.

nola_swammi 11-27-2017 11:18 AM

Re: We Had An Ugly Game

Why are people blaming the OL? They wasn't perfect but they were far from horrible. Just face it Brees was not Brees out there. Don't just listen to what the commentators say about no separation from wr. When db are playing man it won't be much of a separation, that is why you throw back shoulder throws. Everyone know back in the day Brees would fit those balls in. He also had his opportunities with big plays down field to Ginn, he was either short with the pass or he just didn't throw it. I didn't consider Brees horrible considering he was 22/32, 246 yds, td. The problem was they weren't running the ball enough with Kamara. 5 running plays, that was it for Kamara. Let's be real, Sean Payton's play calling didn't do the saints any favors.

Why shot my dream down? Can we at at least still cut Harris? :)

Re: We Had An Ugly Game

I thought the offensive line played just fine. We held on to the ball too long on multiple occasions and Drew makes some of the most mind puzzling throws sometimes. I don't know how he didn't have 3-4 picks this past game. I don't think he realizes there are just some throws he can't make anymore. If his timing is off, he doesn't have the arm strength to make up for it. He also missed a couple of easy touchdown passes as well. I'm not saying this to **** on Drew, it's just the truth.

That said, if our starting corners were playing, I believe we would have won this game. On to Carolina. More running the football. More game managing and screens from Drew.

Right. When you consider that our banged up D held the Rams to under 30pts when their average this year is 30pts you cannot blame this loss on the D. Although I will say our pass rush was almost non-existent till later in the game -- which was not good.

Sean Payton knew that we would have to score at least 30pts to win. We didn't do that. Kamara was outstanding. Other than that our O was stagnant. I blame the O line. Brees had no where near the time in the pocket that Goff had, while Drew was hurried and sacked a lot. And, the Rams, contrary to their rep were stuffing Ingram.

Game plan for the Rams was not good either. It was almost like they hadn't studied this team.

Probably not this year but I would have kept Arthur Maulet over Harris.

Fingers crossed we get Ken and/or Lattimore back this week.

Re: We Had An Ugly Game

It's impossible to play at the highest level week after week. Especially, with other teams gearing up to throw their best at you. The coaching was not great yesterday. Payton overthinks/out thinks himself sometimes. The running game has been the major reason for this year's team success. Yet, it's just Payton's nature to want to throw it around. His clock management and use of time outs has always been poor. The team is beat up. Down three starters on defense yesterday. Two being the starting CB's going against a good passing team. The special teams looked worse yesterday. Took a step back. Every receiver outside of Thomas was a no show yesterday. Fleener is just not good. And not to be forgotten, the officiating was horribly one sided yesterday. All that being said, the Saints lost a close game to a good Rams team on the road. Lots of things to work on. Some negatives that can be overcame. A few things just are what they are. 8-3 after starting 0-2. I'm good.

200 yards in penalties alone are enough to earn a loss. It’s almost like giving them free points.

I know at least 30 of those penalty yards came from Kenny Vaccaro.

dizzle88 11-27-2017 03:10 PM

Re: We Had An Ugly Game

I just don't understand Vaccaro sometimes.

Some games he makes game changing plays like the pick vs Carolina or a 4th down stop vs Chicago.

Then other times he will just sit there looking lost, like when he was in man coverage yesterday and he just stopped whilst the ball was in the air, then acted all shocked when the Rams player caught it.

I just don't understand his inconsistencies, his rookie season he was all over the place, he certainly looks to have lost a step pretty quickly.
