Alvin Kamara on pace for most yards per carry since 1958
When Darren Sproles averaged 6.93 yards on 87 carries in 2011, he did something only one other running back had done since the 1950s - he averaged at least 6.5 yards on 80 or more carries in a single season. That other player was Bo Jackson, who average 6.84 on 81 carries in just seven games in 1987.
It's an almost impossible feat in the modern era, which boasts a higher level of size and skill at the defensive positions than pre-1960s football. It's also a much more pass-oriented game than it was back then. That's why it's been so breathtaking to watch Alvin Kamara play football this year. The Saints rookie has been explosive this season, rushing for 608 yards and seven touchdowns on 87 carries in 13 games. That's an average of 6.99 yards per attempt on the season thus far. Only four other players in NFL history have ever finished a season with 7.0 or more yards per attempt on at least 80 carries, and the most recent to do so was Hall of Famer Lenny Moore in 1958. He'd have had 150 more if he came back into the Atlanta game (and I have no doubt we would have won)
