Saints' Sheldon Rankins says second sack of season was 'long overdue'

This is an apologist story for Rankins - his production simply has not warranted his selection as an early first round pick...

Not everyone can be Aaron Donald, but he was sold as the next one to fans and simply has disappointed...

Saints shouldn't have spent the 12th pick of the for a player to take up two blockers, essentially a fullback for the defensive line...

The pick has turned out to be disappointing to say the least, he has been outshined by Onyamata.

If he has another year like this we can plant him firmly with the bust label.

We agree, way too late. BUT keep it up for the 5 games and all is forgiven.

I don’t have any issue with Sheldon’s performance this season. He’s playing more NT and DE than just the 3-technique. We’ve been complaining about needing a DT that can eat up double-teams but for some reason when Rankins does it he’s a bust. I don’t get it.

"The best example came during last week’s 30-10 win over the Bucs.

Three offensive linemen blocked Rankins while he played nose tackle. Tampa Bay’s center and two guards shielded Rankins from Jameis Winston in the second quarter.

That left Jordan with a one-on-one matchup on the edge. Jordan plowed through and sacked Winston on third down to force a punt."

Rankins is a piece to build a solution but he is not a corner stone piece to start off with.

Fairley was that corner stone to make Rankins work.

Rankins will always be the accent and never the main ingredient. A good accent but just an accent none the less.

This is what was proven again this year. Go get that 43NT to make this pick work.

A proven top 20 run stuffer among all NFL DL iis a good place to start. Especially one miscast, under appreciated and can be had fairly cheaply

Short memory, this guy came from a broken leg his rookie year and played exceptional. This year he haven't produce the same pressure on qbs but he was stellar in gap control against the run. IMHO he is far from being a bust, but on the same token he have work to do to become a STAR player

I'm not for labeling him a bust. Cam Jordan's production has been otherworldly. That doesn't happen often without a good DT. Run defense is better overall...doesn't happen without DTs doing their job.

The problem with DTs is that sacks/TFL/tackles stats don't tell the story about their job. I would like for him to be a 10 sack guy, but it doesn't appear that he's wired that way. He's been a fraction of a sec late on numerous sacks this year, so at least he's applying consistent pressure...that only helps the secondary, who has seen a revival this year.

He's a quality DT, my point is should we have spent the No. 12 pick on a guy that we could have gotten the same production from another player in the third, fourth, fifth round???

In all fairness, the 1st round of that draft was largely garbage from about pick #10 (Eli Apple) and on. I wanted Shaq Lawson and he’s been even more disappointing than Rankins (from a splash play standpoint... I’m not actually disappointed in Rankins.)

If Nick Fairley was playing he would be considered better. He's having a good season as far as I can tell with my untrained eye.

Yeah I don't get the hate honestly. People like to say he's no Aaron Donald, but look at the D-line that dude has been blessed to play with so far. I'm not saying Sheldon is on Aaron's level, but it's really not fair to compare the two when one clearly has an overall advantage. I think back to La'Roi Glover, and for as great as he was, he didn't become truly dominant until big Norman Hand was brought in to play alongside him. I want to see Sheldon get the same chance.

I haven't seen him do much, but I read an article that said he has a good year despite the numbers.

Sadly much of our local press throws softballs so they can be "allowed" to continue their profession and cover the Saints...

As much an @sshole he was, Ron Svoboda was the last guy to really call out a Saints Head Coach or anyone for that matter...

Ed Daniels is not as confrontational, but doesn't sugar-coat it the way other NoLa journalist do...

Jeff Duncan used to really take the criticism all the way to the top (Benson) but even he's chilled lately...

We could've done a lot more with that pick; maybe moving Rankins to end will allow him to get the production to justify the pick...
