Re: Saints' Sheldon Rankins says second sack of season was 'long overdue'
This is an apologist story for Rankins - his production simply has not warranted his selection as an early first round pick...
Not everyone can be Aaron Donald, but he was sold as the next one to fans and simply has disappointed... Saints shouldn't have spent the 12th pick of the for a player to take up two blockers, essentially a fullback for the defensive line... |

The pick has turned out to be disappointing to say the least, he has been outshined by Onyamata.
If he has another year like this we can plant him firmly with the bust label. |

I don’t have any issue with Sheldon’s performance this season. He’s playing more NT and DE than just the 3-technique. We’ve been complaining about needing a DT that can eat up double-teams but for some reason when Rankins does it he’s a bust. I don’t get it.

Rankins is a piece to build a solution but he is not a corner stone piece to start off with.
Fairley was that corner stone to make Rankins work. Rankins will always be the accent and never the main ingredient. A good accent but just an accent none the less. This is what was proven again this year. Go get that 43NT to make this pick work. A proven top 20 run stuffer among all NFL DL iis a good place to start. Especially one miscast, under appreciated and can be had fairly cheaply DaQuan Jones 6036 322 5.35 Tennessee |

Re: Saints' Sheldon Rankins says second sack of season was 'long overdue'
I'm not for labeling him a bust. Cam Jordan's production has been otherworldly. That doesn't happen often without a good DT. Run defense is better overall...doesn't happen without DTs doing their job.
The problem with DTs is that sacks/TFL/tackles stats don't tell the story about their job. I would like for him to be a 10 sack guy, but it doesn't appear that he's wired that way. He's been a fraction of a sec late on numerous sacks this year, so at least he's applying consistent pressure...that only helps the secondary, who has seen a revival this year. |
