Saints still working to fix surprising third-down woes

One reason this year's third-down numbers are so staggering is because the Saints have been so good on the other three downs. Despite struggling to convert on third down, the Saints were tied seventh in the NFL in total first downs (332) because of their success of first, second and fourth down. The offense led the NFL on fourth down by converting at 80 percent (12 of 15), which helped offset the third-down issues in some games.

Thanks to the strong play on the first two downs, the Saints had just 194 third-down attempts this season, which were the fewest in the NFL and fewest of the Payton era. Still, the conversion rate is an issue.

It is a weird stat. I'm as confused as the team is.

What's really odd is how well we do on 4th down.

Snead used to be great on third down. Where'd he go?

His DUI in the the offseason may be the tip of the iceberg.

The dude may have larger issues.

Just sayin.

Third down issues all rest at the feet of the playcaller/ head coach.

I really like Snead as a player for the Saints, I wish they would try and use him a bit more.

I think I'm right in saying that he has been open on a few occasions in recent games but they haven't gone to him and tried to force the ball to another player, resulting in incompletion.

Maybe they are saving him for a breakout performance against the Panthers?

Tight end with lack of real #2 rec. Are good starts. It is kind of amazing what we have accomplished despite some missing parts. Despite how we all feel about fleecer, he must do a little something because offense seemed to have lost something since he went to IR

Oline health is huge for. Hope we are good to go there. Hope Ingram is fully healthy too

Could be, but I doubt Payton would have kept him on the team if he thought alcohol was the problem. It’s ok for Payton himself to be a drunk but he won’t put up with it from his players.
Unless Snead is his coke supplier.

WTF??? Payton has never let his drinking influence his job but he knows how to celebrate. Cocaine? Really? We've been over this. No proof at all. No penalties from the league. Let it go man! Just keeping a nasty rumor going?
