Very VERY interesting rumor concerning the Chargers

and pick # 28:

Quote:

Apr. 20 - Only one year removed from trading the rights to No. 1 pick Eli Manning, the San Diego Chargers are setting up scenarios to be big players in the first round again. This time they want to emerge with an offensive and a defensive player.
The team is leaning toward keeping the No. 12 pick, but is listening to offers. One team above them has made an intriguing offer, while three teams have contacted them wanting to move up.

A more likely scenario is starting to develop at No. 28. Though the other team and the player are unknown at the moment, the Chargers are considering an exchange for a veteran defensive end and a draft choice.

If the Chargers can land the defensive end and the draft choice, they can concentrate on offense with their first pick.

I read on another board the end is rumored to be Simeon Rice of Tampa because, oh my gosh imagine this, they need cap room to sign their picks. Can we sneak in there with Howard?

The Bucs cannot trade Rice and another pick to get #28. Rice has had 42.5 sacks in the past 4 years. He is a good guy. He plays injured and you cannot see any dropoff. It doesn\'t matter that his contract is for $6mil this season either.

Oh my bad, what was I thinking? Noone in the NFL EVER trades \"proven players.\" It\'s an unspoken rule. Sorry. ;)

Yeah, the NFL does trade proven players, but Rice and Brooks are the players that make Tampa\'s D go. I cant see them trading Rice away. However, it would be nice for us to sneak in there. I dont know what the exact value is and what pick we would have to give up. But we could have our options open at 16 and then grab Burnett at 28 and still have pick 40 open. I wouldnt mind it at all. Does anyone know what the value would be of say our 3rd or 4th rounder?

Not saying they\'ll get rid of Simeon, but let\'s not forget that he torched his coach in the media at the end of last year. Simeon actually questioned Gruden\'s whole coaching environment.

Chucky gets angry when a guy gets in his dog house.

A coach wouldn\'t impulsively get rid of a guy over petty disagreements would he? :D

Hey - maybe we can trade Deuce for a draft pick? High second, late first? Why not? RBs are a dime a dozen in the NFL, we\'ve got a backup who went to the Pro Bowl what, two or three years ago now. Deuce is going to want a big contract that will cost us millions under the cap (just like Horn and Howard right? LOL). He\'s a liability and we need LBs. The only way to get them now is through the draft. Nevermind that the TEAM apparently isn\'t concerned enough with LB to do anything about it for 4 years. Nevermind that the TEAM is just as likely to pick a complete bust as a starter. Nevermind that we drafted Deuce with the what 12th pick 4 years ago - if we could get the 28th pick 4 years later and maybe draft a guy who might possibly be in the league in 4 years but costs less, and more importantly, lets draft fanatics theorize about who we COULD draft but WON\'T, that\'s all that matters!!!

Who\'s with me? Trade Deuce!!!

Hey - here\'s an even better idea. Maybe we can trade the number 16 in this year\'s draft for the 20th in the 2010 draft!!! Then we can solve all our problems that year and we don\'t have to pay any players between now and then!

WhoDat --

I\'ll stop watching the Saints if they trade Deuce. You can find me on an Atlanta Falcons\' message board if that happens.

Go Falcons!!! ;)

Hey whatever works for you Who. If Ronnie Brown was there at 16, I would take him, and trade Deuce for one of your \"proven\" players. That\'s just me. But that\'s not reality cause Brown will not get out of the top 10. But trading Howard has to be done and no matter how many times your arguments about keeping him are shot down, you always go back to it. So me saying what I would do in a hypothetical situation and you wanting to ruin the team so we can keep Howard are two different things. But have at it bud. I\'ll even join you.

IF RONNIE BROWN IS THERE AT 16, TRADE DEUCE!!!! Happy?

That would also appease the desires of many to finish dead last, so we could have the 1st pick in the draft. Imagine how many picks we\'d get for Matt Lineart (sp?).

Or Who, we can trade all our draft pciks away until the year Howard won\'t be here any more. Then we won\'t have to worry about signing them. I mean they are all unproven and prob won\'t help the team anyway. And we know what Howard will give us. So why would that be a problem? Keep trading away our drafts until Howard retires cause he is so proven we can\'t do without him. :casstet:

If the Saints got rid of Brooks I would be very very depressed.

All of you Brooks\' bashers have made me be the biggest Brooks\' supporter in the world.

And the biggest Jake Delhomme hater too.

And you guys have made me absolutely sick of any guy with the last name of Manning!!

See what kind of affect you guys have on me.

Brooks till death!!! :D

I\'ll tell you what Whodi. Why don\'t you and I do this. Let\'s go find the 7 best players that the Saints could have signed in FA via a trade for a veteran player given a first through seventh round pick this offseason. Then, let\'s compare them to the best draft picks the Saints could get with a first through seventh at their current spot. Then we\'ll see who performs better in 2005. Wanna make a bet as to who it could be?

saintswhodi 04-22-2005 02:35 PM

Very VERY interesting rumor concerning the Chargers

Um, I never questioned the little to nothing the Saints did in FA. I was the first one to post how pissed I was. SO I don\'t know how looking at a list of FAs as opposed to draft picks is gonna change the fact that WE NEED TO TRADE HOWARD, and the most we are probably gonna get for him is a draft pick. But you do what you wish. I can easily make a list of FAs who we COULD have had that WOULD have made this team better but that time has passed hasn\'t it? So what\'s the point? We didn\'t get them. But we haven\'t drafted yet. So basicallywhat you wanna do is look at something we COULD have done this year in FA as opposed to what we still CAN do in the draft. Huh?

WhoDat 04-22-2005 02:36 PM

OK - let\'s make another bet - who exactly do you think the Saints could or should sign with the draft pick that they get for Howard?

Since I don\'t yet know who is available, and what pick we will get, how would I know? I\'ll make you this deal, once we do trade him, I will tell you then. Fair enough? I would not be surprised at all though if he was still on the team after the draft, and we trade him for a first next year. With two firsts next year we could move up and get you know who!!!! Now that I won\'t even hide the fact I want it to happen.

I think the insanity has officially taken over (in this post and several others), and it seems to be spreading...

Still don\'t understand how Doug Jolley goes for a late 1st rounder, but E. James, S. Alexander and D. Howard are barely getting a legitimate sniff.

Other teams must be having money troubles, too...
