Re: Vince McMahon bringing back the XFL?
Good. Competition may be just what the doctor ordered for the NFL.

Re: Vince McMahon bringing back the XFL?
At least it provides players that can't make it in the NFL to have an income and for a small few to make NFL rosters. He had absolutely no plan of what to do last time so if he hasn't worked it out it will fold again. Arena football had a plan and is good entertainment.

Re: Vince McMahon bringing back the XFL?
The USFL, or something like it, would be the thing to bring back. It was successful the first time, but the NFL illegally monopolized the market, and though the fan interest was there, many of the owners mismanaged their money.
The USFL WON their antitrust case against the NFL, but for reasons I have yet to hear, they were only awarded 3 dollars in the case. That pretty much bankrupted that league. It is pretty obvious there was some type of collusion going on to keep the USFL from competing with the NFL. Get another USFL-type league back together, and get a commissioner with an actual plan, and let's see if the NFL can pull off another scam. One of two things will happen: Either the NFL is forced to start playing by the rules AND respecting all of it's fan base, or they will eventually fold, as is all but inevitable as things currently stand, in my opinion. Either way, it will work itself out for the better. |
If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

Re: Vince McMahon bringing back the XFL?
This may be perfect timing for him. A lot of people are getting fed up with the NFL. Not because of the dumb anthem thing but because of all the ticky tack rules and extreme lack of parity. It’s so obviously scripted now it’s pathetic.

£20 says the XFL figure out what a catch is before the NFL do.

What you mentioned about them having financial problems is what I alluded to when I said that many of the owners mismanaged their money. I'm not a fan of a cap, and don't agree with those who have said not having a cap was the problem. Baseball has never had a cap, and I'm not sure if the NBA does either, though I know both of those leagues have employed a luxury tax threshold, which I think is the best way to keep teams from going crazy, without simultaneously choking out any chance to gain a competitive advantage. I believe success deserves to be rewarded. Salary caps prevent that. It makes no sense when all leagues already give the worst team the first pick in the draft, or at least a very high pick, for those sports that use the lottery system. With the USFL, they just got too aggressive, and without at least having a luxury tax threshold, the bidding wars for players got out of control. They attempted to move the start of the league year from the spring to the fall, to compete head to head with the NFL, and filed that lawsuit against the NFL, but got screwed despite winning the suit. They just didn't have enough leadership at the top, when it came to finances, and also I strongly suspect that collusion was at play with the way that lawsuit played out. The XFL was a different story. It was just over the top silly, in my opinion. But maybe McMahon learned something, and will try to have more of an honest league. That would be hard to believe, coming from him. |
