Re: Saints' Drew Brees on his pending free agency: 'I'm not going anywhere else'
Why just a one year deal, though?

Re: Saints' Drew Brees on his pending free agency: 'I'm not going anywhere else'
Wants to keep his options open. I think he may have had doubts about the future of the team back then and wanted to see if any real changes were going to be made in order to turn the team around.
Not that he didn’t want to stay in New Orleans but he wanted to make sure he had a coaching staff and team as dedicated as he is. |

But, things may change. they may agree to something longer this time around. I get the sense that Brees has no desire to uproot the family and move elsewhere. If he ever felt there was "no future" with the Saints he would simply retire. But, over the two years previous to the 2017 season Brees knew the team was in the process of rebuilding. He knew exactly what the future was. Of all persons he would have been one of the very least to have had any doubts about that future. |

Re: Saints' Drew Brees on his pending free agency: 'I'm not going anywhere else'
One year deals would give more latitude for cap manipulation. Of course, that would require the cooperation of both parties. Brees would have to know his future was secure with the Saints and they would have to know that Brees was committed to the team, as well. It would give the team the ability to restructure each season to optimize cap use.
Brees could easily get a multi year deal elsewhere if he wanted to leave so I see it as his commitment to do what is best for his team and still get rewarded. Brees is a smart man. He knows that while it is about the money, it isn't ALL about the money. He has built a brand that is worth far more than what he gets paid to play the game anymore. And that brand is tied to Louisiana to a great degree. He is at a point in his life that chasing the NFL dollar could have a negative affect on that brand. I'll guarantee you that Brees earns more in endorsements and business ventures than he does playing football. The Brees family is pretty well set up for a few generations. Too bad not all athletes are as savvy as Brees. |

Re: Saints' Drew Brees on his pending free agency: 'I'm not going anywhere else'
He has really been on borrowed time with that reconstructed shoulder...
If anyone is familiar with the procedure and the subsequent rehabilitation, it truly is a modern miracle what he's accomplished... Deep ball accuracy has fallen off; damn the statistics, watch the games, receivers are slowing up allowing beaten defenders to catch them... But the out routes are really taking an eternity to get to their spots, really exposing him to pick-sixes... He's such an intense, intelligent competitor that his experience has allowed him to overcome the natural physical decline... We're closer to the end than we fans want to realize, so soak up and celebrate ever last great performance... |

Have to have the velocity. Accuracy will always be there, he can adjust for deceleration but that velocity...really noticeable now which to me is odd. Doug Flute for example, smaller QB but he still had it even at a ripe age.

Brees' shoulder story is the pinnacle meeting of a dedicated man and the best of contemporary medicine... |

Re: Saints' Drew Brees on his pending free agency: 'I'm not going anywhere else'
I noticed a little less zip and accuracy on the ball towards the end of the season. He will decline physically but that is only part of his game. I can't think of anyone that I'd rather have managing a game than Drew.
