A bunch of teams have gotten a lot better this week. Hopefully we will continue to do the same.

I still disagree completely. Drew Brees and his family are firmly rooted in New Orleans. He would retire before leaving regardless of the Saints record. First and foremost, he wants to win more championships with the Saints. Secondly, he wants to break the all-time passing record (which will happen this season) and the all-time TD record (which should easily happen in 2019). At this point in his career money isn't the driving force it once had been. He is set for life. He has generational wealth. Now his family is the driving force. There is no way he is uprooting his family at this point. As I said, he would quit before doing that. If you haven't read both Brees' and Payton's books, do so. They both tell quite a bit how these two guys click.

I bet the Saints are getting absolutely clobbered right now with people sending in their payments to renew their season tickets. The deadline to send in a chunk of the payment was this week, in fact I think it may have even been tomorrow was the exact deadline to pay the next installment for season ticket holders.... I know me and my buddy were holding onto our money, poised with the credit card, holding our breath, waiting to see what happened before we sent in our payment for next year. I'm betting we weren't the only ones doing that. Sent!

Condon's made plenty at the expense of this team's AND Brees' success, so that MoFo is owed no apology; that's just Brees' good character...

Next CBA should have a caveat to allow for one true franchise player where his cap number doesn't break the team's ability to be competitive...

Not disagreeing with your proposal for a new Tom Condon greeting.. Just commenting that there a lot of layers to this contract and its value that we dont care about but others do.

- Condons compensation is dependent on the contract value. (This is where the greeting fits :))

- Drew's contract always has the potential to affect future QB contracts and QB Tag values.

- I am willing to bet that Drew feels obligated to get maximum value as part of the NFLPA's leadership.

- Lastly there is Drew getting what he wants for his family.

Now here is where we see things a little differently. While the size of Drew Brees's contracts has not helped the teams cap space in any way, and we can debate whether Drew actually met that contract value or not, I dont think anyone would say that we gained nothing from it.

Below is where the damage to the team was done; dead money and the contracts that made the majority of that. ALL of that as well as Drew's contracts, is on Loomis .... He inked every one of them and its Loomis's job to keep Condon from getting max value. :)

Dead Money
-$25M 2017
-$42M 2016
-$34M 2015
-$16M 2014

You really went out on a limb on that one.

You also thought the relationship between Brees and Jimmy Graham meant that the Saints wouldn't trade Graham, if I remember correctly. For someone who loves to make fun of "pretend general managers", you sure like to pretend you sit in on GM talks, and pat yourself on the back for an easy prediction.

You don't remember correctly. I can't imagine I would say anything along those lines when I have always backed whatever the front office determines as the right move.

And, I am not making fun of pretend general managers. I have bought into the fact that it is entertaining for some to try to anticipate what would be the best needs for their favorite team and what moves it would take to accomplish that task. While it isn't my bag I do now support those who do enjoy the game.

BTW, welcome back. I haven't seen much of you recently.

This was the right thing for both sides. Having such a formidable run game will add a couple more years to his expiration date.

Tom Condon still has a chance at a mega $ QB contract. The dirty birds are negotiating an extension for Matt Ryan this offseason. Let's see if he can get $30 million a year.

Details on Drew Brees' contract with the Saints:
Signing bonus: $10.5M
Base salary in 2018: $10.2M
Incentives in 2018: $3.3M
Cap number in 2018: $24M

Doesn't leave much
Going have to start some creative accountancy for any big deals.

We started out with $31.3M free cap. Brees was already counting $6 toward that figure. The new deal adds an additional $18M leaving $13.3M. There is also around $9M in roster bonuses that can be automatically converted to signing bonuses thus free up another $6M to $7M. Therefore, before doing any creative accounting, such as restructuring deals, we're looking at around $20M to work with. Converting roster bonuses do not required approval of the player as it looks the same to them. The only difference is that the amount is amortized for cap reasons over the remainder of their contract. The player gets the whole amount regardless.

They do but that deal has to be paid via the cap at some point. Im not worried about anything i just don't want to see any stupid deals and mortgaging the future.

Yes. But pushing it forward means it becomes a smaller percentage of the cap since the cap keeps growing at such a fast pace. And, unlike a few defensive players blunders in the pre-Jeff Ireland era, Brees earns every penny allocated.

Drew Brees is now set to count $33.5M against the Saints' salary cap in 2019. https://t.co/X6nklQ4Mel

That's without a restructure. Every year from now on out they'll do a new two year deal with a lower year one cap figure. The longer they keep pushing it out the lower percentage of the cap it will eat. And, besides, $22.25M of that $33.5M is base salary and wouldn't be payable if for some reason Brees doesn't return. It will continue to be that type of structure until he decides to retire.

All I say as it relates to #9 is that you better enjoy his greatness for the next 2+ seasons. It could be many, many years before we ever see anything like it in New Orleans at the QB position.

I'll let everyone else breakdown the cap ;).

I'm just sharing that with members that may be concerned. Most of the media hacks out there do not understand "capology" and are constantly sharing misleading information.

All I know is when you add 20 million to 18 million it sometimes become 27 million unless you're doing that new math where you take 3 cows and turn them around and they see 3 chickens, who killed the turtle!

I really don't care about the cap. The team has handled that very well over many years and will handle it again!

The cap accounting is so fluid that most fans freak out over nothing. Loomis has been a master in foreseeing the exponentially increasing cap and has leveraged it brilliantly.

According to D. Orlando Ledbetter, there's a pretty good chance.

"The Falcons are hoping to sign quarterback Matt Ryan to a contract extension that will likely be six years and in the $180-190 million range."
