Drew Brees Deal is Done!

1 Attachment(s)
Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints have agreed to a new two-year deal worth $50 million, with $27 million guaranteed, a source confirmed to ESPN, keeping the future Hall of Famer off the free-agent market as expected.

The news was first reported by NFL Network.

http://a3.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img...40&cquality=40

Brees' deal will be written as a two-year deal, but in actuality it will be a one-year deal with a team option after the first year, per source. It also will include a no-trade clause, virtually ensuring that Brees finishes his career in New Orleans.

Brees, who turned 39 in January, insisted all along that he wants to be a "Saint for life" and didn't plan to let any other teams in on a bidding war -- even though had he done so, he possibly could have become the highest-paid player in NFL history for the second time in his career.

The #Saints and QB Drew Brees have struck a 2-year deal worth $50M, sources tell me and @SlaterNFL. He gets $27M guaranteed.

He’s back and everyone can breathe.

No reason why anyone should have been holding their breath. As I've been saying all along there was always a ZERO percent chance a deal wasn't going to be made. Anyone who thought different doesn't understand the dynamics involved with Brees, Payton, Loomis and the Saints.

Does that 50ml include the 18ml signing bonus that he was owed then?

If so he has effectively agreed a 32ml 2 year deal

That I’m not sure about. I’m under the assumption that the $18 million dead cap hit is just being kicked down the road and will hit when he’s officially done.

Winning and making the playoffs last year was critical to renewing with Brees. As was last year's draft and the success of Kamara and Lattimore. There's a reason to keep the window open and try to win now. If Saints had finished with 6 or 7 wins it would have been a different story.

Brees was re-signing with the Saints regardless of whether the Saints won 11 games or zero games. He has said all along that he plans to play well into his forties and with all of those years being with the Saints. He said this for years and I for one believe him as he has never done anything for me NOT to believe what he says.

Talked more with Saints QB Drew Brees about his new deal: “There was no doubt in our minds, I think both myself and the Saints, that we were gonna get a deal done. It was just a matter of what was the most fair deal for me and for the team to put us in the best position to succeed in the near future.” Brees said he would be “lying” if he didn’t admit it’s hard to decide between taking max value and keep raising the bar for other players (especially as a former NFLPA leader). “But for me this was about putting our team in the best position to go win a championship in the next few years.” And he practically apologized to agent Tom Condon for not allowing him to max out his value – which certainly would have been more on the open market.

Does this sound like someone that is in his last season. He said "next few years" meaning he plans to keep playing for a "few more years" at least.

So where does that leave us when it comes to the cap?

Seems like a good deal. Like I said in a thread a while back, when is enough money enough and when doesn winning another Championship matter more. I think we just got an answer.

Won't know until the details come out, but we aren't close to the cap and still have more contracts that can be restructured and roster bonuses that can be converted to signing bonuses that can open up many more millions. Cap is not an issue at all.

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints have agreed to a new two-year deal worth $50 million, a source confirmed to ESPN, keeping the future Hall of Famer off the free-agent market as expected.

The deal includes $27 million guaranteed. The news was first reported by NFL Network.

Brees' deal will be written as a two-year deal, but in actuality it will be a one-year deal with a team option after the first year, he confirmed to ESPN. It also will include a no-trade clause, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, virtually ensuring that Brees finishes his career in New Orleans.

"I think that provides certainly the team with the most flexibility when it comes to being able to anticipate the future and the ability to acquire free agents and re-sign players on our existing roster that will build a championship team," said Brees about his willingness to only take one year guaranteed.

Brees, who turned 39 in January, insisted all along that he wants to be a "Saint for life" and didn't plan to let any other teams in on a bidding war -- even though had he done so, he possibly could have become the highest-paid player in NFL history for the second time in his career.

"I love my team and am excited about the opportunity we will have together," Brees said.

Brees' decision to stay in New Orleans became even easier after the Saints re-emerged as Super Bowl contenders last season following a three-year playoff drought. Thanks to a revamped defense and improved running game, Brees was able to throw for his fewest yards (4,334), touchdowns (23) and interceptions (eight) in his 12 seasons with the Saints while setting the NFL record for completion percentage (72.0).

The Saints, however, have made it clear that they want to take things one year at a time with Brees' contract at this stage of his career -- especially since they still have $18 million in dead money from his previous contracts waiting to hit the books. All of that money would have hit this year's salary cap if Brees hadn't signed a new deal by March 14.

Brees apologized to Tom Condon? F**k Tom Condon!

I get it's Condon's job to get max for his client, but there's also success measured in other ways and that includes more endorsements for a repeat Superbowl winner...

Condon's made plenty at the expense of this team's AND Brees' success, so that MoFo is owed no apology; that's just Brees' good character...

Next CBA should have a caveat to allow for one true franchise player where his cap number doesn't break the team's ability to be competitive...

Hmm? Brees wasn't owed anything. That $18 million is simply cap accounting. Brees got all his extension money from the last contract when he signed it in 2016.

We'll have to wait for the details to see how long the out years are.

Anyone else think this is a shorter deal than expected? I was expecting at least a 3 year deal. Maybe even a four year deal to make sure he is here to retirement.

No. It is essentially a one year deal. The $27 million is guaranteed in year one and year two is a team option. This reflects exactly what Brees has mentioned about the remainder of his career as a Saint. He has said he expects, even while planning on playing well into his 40's (all with the Saints), that he'll play it year to year for the rest of his career.

I have been saying all along that the deal would most likely be of this type. Yes, other types of deals have been speculated, but this deal matches what Brees had detailed himself.

This!

This is what I was speaking of in another thread about Jimmy Graham. The player has the power, not the agent, and certainly not the NFLPA. Drew is a walking example of how to live.

This is a totally different case than Graham's agreeing to challenge the franchise tag designation for the NFLPA. Don't forget that Brees did the exact same thing as Graham when he agreed to challenge the secondary franchise tag issue for the NFLPA. In that case he did exactly what Graham did.

We need to address the area opposite Michael Thomas though, we need another weapon on offense.

Like I said, if we had another 7-9 season he would be somewhere else as we speak. Payton bought himself some more time with Brees when he made the coaching changes and decided to commit to the run.
A bunch of teams have gotten a lot better this week. Hopefully we will continue to do the same.
