Wanna Trade Down?

Quote:

New Orleans Saints fans are fanatical in their hope for a trade down. It’s their great hope, the white whale to their insane Captain Ahab. Every day they ask me on Twitter if the Saints will trade down out of the 27th-overall pick. Every time I mention a prospect worth looking at for that pick or drop a new mock draft, trading down is the suggestion.

My frustration with this is that it’s not up to the Saints whether they trade down. Each of the last few years they’ve been open to it but couldn’t find any offers, at least not early in the draft. It’s just not their M.O.

So what would it take for that course to change in 2018? To find out, I’ve highlighted three players who would need to be available at the Saints’ first round pick for other teams to ask about trading places. Let’s dive in:

An impact player will be available at #27. The Saints can use that at WR, DE, LB, S, DT, and OL. If anything they will be trading up.

I haven't been hearing much at all about trading down. I think John Sigler is full of crap on that. He just wanted an angle for the article.

Yes, lotta talent in the 2nd Round.

If we trade down, grab their 2018 2nd Rd & 2019's 1st or 2nd. Not 100% on the trade pick algorithms, but having two 2019 1st Rd or two 2nd Rd picks plus getting back our 2018 2nd Rd pick would be amazing. Who could we fleece with that deal?

But stay put if the 2 top DT's or those top DE's are available. If we trade up, I will vomit.

TBH, I can see scenarios where we trade up and trade down that I'd be on board with. It just depends on how the draft unfolds. We're kind of in that spot on the draft board where you can lean in either direction and be fine as the talent starts to equal out and it becomes like a pool of potentially good players.

A spreadsheet, of course. Adding it to Favorites. Thanks much.

For what it's worth, we've got 945.6 value points for our whole draft & we could move up to 17th/18th overall if we trade our entire draft. But I think that nonsensical tomfoolery has been done before...

The only way I see us trading up would be to get ahead of Carolina and Atlanta to get a single player we covet. But I think there should still be a good cloud of players with equal grades and we could stay in place and go BPA with the 27th pick. If anything we might use some later draft picks as collateral to move up into the second round for another player we covet.

However, there are supposedly some good players in the middle rounds where we have enough ammo to get a few good picks. Although it's hard to imagine getting any immediate contribution from players in the fifth round down. We could get lucky with an O-lineman later in the draft from a small school that could get meaningful snaps if needed.

Still, I want to draft O-line in the first round where you get five years and you protect Drew. We have the dominant line that we've wanted because we continue to invest heavily at the position. :argue:

I’m thinking trade up two spots to jump ahead of Atlanta for DT Taven Bryan if he’s still available when Tennessee’s on the clock. We swung and missed on Suh and Wilkerson in free agency and Taven Bryan brings the nasty like a much more raw Suh.
