The problem is Davenport was picked by using two 1st rd picks plus a fourth rounder and if he play like a Courtney Brown this and next year draft will be considered a total failure.
In my opinion this was too much of a risk for a player with 1st round credentials instead of HOF or All Pro potential like Veta, Chubbs or Barkley. Obviously, Ireland see the potential so I am going to give him the benefit of doubt after picking Marcus over Obi and Marcus was hand down the better safety |

I don't even like saying that we "gave up a 1st round pick". All first round picks aren't equal. A big difference between 14 and 32.

Re: Saints draft Marcus Davenport after trading up in first round
If you go strictly by the numbers of the Draft Value Chart we got fleeced. Even if we win the Super Bowl next year we will have given up 1302 points for a pick that's worth 1100 (and obviously the worse our season goes the bigger the differential gets). So on paper, yes we gave up way too much.
However, this team has a small window with Brees right now to win a Super Bowl. Somehow, I managed to miss every UT San Antonio game so I cannot comment on the kid other than what I've read and there is a wide variety of opinions. The ones that make me nervous are experts that refer to him as raw and a developmental project. But, this FO has earned my trust with the draft they had last year and if this guy can come in immediately and contribute than I'm willing to throw away the numbers and call this trade a success. The key word is "immediately." This is a trade you make for a player who helps you win now, so this kid cannot be a project for this trade to be good for us. Looking forward to seeing how this kid fits in and hopefully gives us the pass rusher we've been looking for opposite Cam and helps us win another Super Bowl! |

Re: Saints draft Marcus Davenport after trading up in first round
Saints valued a very specific requirement much higher than anything else. It's seldom done and to be honest, kinda stinks. It won't stop stinking until the pass rush shows up with him being a solid factor.
It may not even happen this year. For some reason though they feel it will. They think they can forge this kid into gold right now. If they can't we have someone who knows how to sell the sizzle that's for sure. |

Re: Saints draft Marcus Davenport after trading up in first round
He is probably a upgrade over what we have now without time with our coaches. I look for Rag to step up this year and this might pull some chip blocks and doubles from Jordan. Two firsts is a awful lot but if we win the Super Bowl it is well worth it.
