Saints draft Marcus Davenport after trading up in first round

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; It should be noted that most of the negatives we're reading about Davenport are about what it cost us to acquire him, not whether or not he's a great pick for us. I think the consensus is that we got ...

I think the consensus is that we got a fantastic prospect at a crucial position which also happens to be a need for us.

We probably over-paid a little to get him, but thats certainly debatable.

Its my humble opinion that if we had numerous holes on our roster, we over-paid. But since we don't have glaring holes up and down this roster, we didn't over-pay.

Its the old Rebuild vs Re-load. We aren't rebuilding, we're re-loading and Davenport is a key piece of ammo.

You make a great point here Danno. Nobody talks about the actual player but rather the trade compensation. I’m guilty as well. All the draft gurus had Davenport as a top 15 player but for some reason giving up next year’s 1st makes him lesser of a player it seems. I don’t know... I’m pretty conflicted still.

I don't see the issue with giving up a first rounder next season. As successful as I am expecting the Saints to be in 2019 that first rounder will be one pick prior to the first pick in the second round. Big deal.

We needed a pass rusher to get to the next level. Barely escaped Newton and co. then the Vikings faceplant. It was a problem. We over paid but so what. Have to do it sometimes. I totally overpaid for a Caddy but we love the car! All the bells and whistles that actually provide some cool features. If one wants that stuff immediately it's gonna cost. We paid it and nothing is saying it should not work out. He's not tapped for talent and not injured. He is also lined up with one of the best and good coaching. All +++'s. I can't think of any real negatives other not not getting a bargain but we got that last year so splurge a little. We blew up the draft last year. Almost NEVER happens. Time to come back to reality.

Also to note, the "experts" claimed that there were only about 15 or so players this year worthy of a 1st round grade.

We nabbed one of them.

Certainly no one said there were any players worth TWO first round draft grades

When those two picks are #27 and #32? I'd say #14 would be a good value.

On paper, best Saints team to ever take the field IMO. Where is the weakness? Maybe depth on lines, LB's but everyone has that problem. Thinking we improve that with the remaining picks. Backup OL and a LB. Maybe a flyer QB or RB.

Yes, except our main weakness remains stopping the run up the middle.
