3 reasons the Saints should be excited about undrafted free agent J.T. Barrett
Former Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett wasn’t taken on the last day of the NFL Draft, but is getting a minicamp tryout with the Saints, the NFL chance that he needs.
Barrett is one of the most decorated quarterbacks in Ohio State and Big Ten history. He was the only three-time captain in school history, led the Buckeyes to two Big Ten titles in his four years, and set the school record with 38 victories and just six losses. https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/Nd7F...10553972.0.jpg He was a top 10 vote-getter in the Heisman Trophy race twice, with a fifth-place finish in 2014 after his freshman season was cut short after a torn ACL. Ohio State would go on to win the national championship that year. Barrett might not be the best quarterback in the draft, but he’s still one that you can get excited about having on your roster. Whether that’s as a backup, or a future starter in the NFL. He can make any play Barrett owns the Big Ten passing touchdowns record with 104, and accumulated over 9,400 yards. He can sling the ol’ pigskin. But he was also effective on the ground when he needed to be. Barrett had over 3,200 rushing yards during his Ohio State career, and 43 touchdowns. In three of his four seasons in Columbus he had at least 11 touchdowns on the ground. One of his signature plays was his game-winning touchdown pass against Penn State this past season, after leading a comeback in the fourth quarter with the Buckeyes down 35-20. The Buckeyes would go on to win that game 39-38. It wasn’t the prettiest game for Barrett and the Buckeyes, but as he did so many times, he led them back. It was not unlike other games in Barrett’s career where they might not have been the most easy thing to watch, but the Buckeyes would eventually come out on top. https://cdn.vox-cdn.com/thumbor/Mb1I.../buckeye.0.gif There’s not a spot he can’t get. It will always be good. You may have heard before, but in the 2016 edition of The Game, the Buckeyes were faced with a crucial fourth down in overtime. Barrett took the snap, and heroically met a Michigan defender right at the first down marker. read more here |

TAYSOM HILL

I think J.T. Barrett is a better Quarterback than Taysom Hill. He’s a better passer and smarter runner. This could be a steal.

Taysom Hill is the most exciting QB prospect the Saints have with the highest ceiling. Taysom Hill is one of the fastest Saints players period. He is 6"3, 225+ lbs. He is sensational running the football. He is aggressive and tough. He has a quick release and a strong arm. Plus Peyton loves him. JT Barret. Whatever. He won't make the team. I predict Hill wins the backup QB job. Savage-cut, Barret-practice squad.

J.T. is a very, very interesting prospect. Dude just makes plays (1st downs & red zone).
He's not the fastest, biggest, most accurate, or have the biggest arm, but he just makes plays. High football IQ. He ran that Urban Meyer offense very well. I think he has a chance in this offensive system. A proven leader of good football teams in a talented conference. What's not to like or to lose? |
Re: 3 reasons the Saints should be excited about undrafted free agent J.T. Barrett
I watched him a great deal throughout his college career and what he does is win. Although from watching him and listening to the talk about him through that time, he's most likely not going to be Drew's replacement. He'll be parking in Pete Carmichael's spot in a few years instead. You may hate Urban Meyer, but it'd be a numbskull move to open your mouth to argue that he doesn't know what he's doing. He keeps saying that J.T. has the head coach gene like none other he's seen.
As far as off the field issues go, he had a run in for underaged drinking. Totally owned it right away, no blaming anyone else or getting it swept under the rug. He paid his penalty and willingly sat through his suspension coaching and encouraging his replacement all the way. He's got the heart of a Saint. |

Lmao at all the blind optimism over Taysom Hill. Listen, he plays for us currently, and thus I hope for the best. But don't let two idiots (Aikman and Buck) misconstrued take fool you into thinking he's the future for sure. I love love love what he brought to special teams last year, but I would be shocked..I'm talking jaw on the floor in stunned silence if he manages to even beat out Savage for the number 2 spot. You don't let your QB of the future play gunner on special teams.

Can he fix the things or is he another Tim Tebow?
It'll be fun to watch. |
Re: 3 reasons the Saints should be excited about undrafted free agent J.T. Barrett
I really like what I read about this guy. Seems like Payton could build a great system around him using players we already have. I bet Payton would cream himself if he could get him to be a solid franchise Qb.
I would love to see what he could do with a dual threat QB. What’s the knock on this guy? Why wasn’t he drafted? Played for a good school in a decent conference and excelled. |

Career Stats for Taysom https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb...om-hill-1.html http://draftscout.com/ratings/dsprof...2017&genpos=QB Notice the difference: https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb...barrett-1.html http://draftscout.com/ratings/dsprof...2018&genpos=qb TJ played 50 games and Taysom only 37 I'm not saying that TJ wouldn't be a good QB I'm saying that TJ has that little extra that changes games. Remember seeing him last year on special teams and how he would just shoot into the pile with no fear at all. I think TJ was brought in for more than just competition but Taysom will beat him out in the end. Coach loves Taysom and I think Taysom is a bit faster in the 40. |

Taysom Hill: 6,269 yards. 58% completions. 43 TDs. 31 INTS J.T. Barrett: 9,434 yards. 63.5% completions. 104 TDs. 30 INTS We have to put some more respect on Barrett’s name. |
Re: 3 reasons the Saints should be excited about undrafted free agent J.T. Barrett
LMAO at people who would hate to have Lamar Jackson because he’s a running QB but then think Taysom Hill is the future.

Re: 3 reasons the Saints should be excited about undrafted free agent J.T. Barrett
UDFA QB's (Taysom Hill) who play on special teams becoming good starting QB's ... pretty much never.
It will be interesting to watch this preseason but Hill is not the heir apparent unless he shows out in the next year or so. |
Re: 3 reasons the Saints should be excited about undrafted free agent J.T. Barrett
Could well be Savage on the cutting block come September.
Or one of the youngsters will be IRd |
Re: 3 reasons the Saints should be excited about undrafted free agent J.T. Barrett
Meanwhile NE drafted an LSU QB, yes.... Danny Etling. I wonder what they see in him no one else sees.

The one knock on him is that he has below average arm strenght. Perhaps he can take Hill's spot so Hill can spend more time with the QB's now. |
Re: 3 reasons the Saints should be excited about undrafted free agent J.T. Barrett
I would've taken Jackson in a heartbeat. I think he could've been a very good QB for many years. I love a QB that can run with authority and hence my favor of Hill. I've thought all along he will be the one sorta like Neo but only time will tell.

Re: 3 reasons the Saints should be excited about undrafted free agent J.T. Barrett
I really don’t get why everyone is so high on Hill. Has he taken a snap at Qb for us? If he played last preseason he didn’t make an impression good enough for me to remember The only thing I know about Hill is that Payton keeps making a point my to say he is good. Almost too much of a point. Other than that I haven’t seen anything on him that leads me to believe he is any good at Qb. Other than “I heard”

Training camp will put a lot of questions regarding Taysom, JT etc to rest. I remember G Grayson (many thought he was the heir apparent to Brees) looking like a deer in headlights when inserted a couple of camps ago. He was totally lost outside the pocket.
IMO both will have to show up and show out @ camp to take Savage spot @ #2. A very capable back up with NFL starter experience. |

I don't recall the game but there was this great come from behind win but it was cause of him that put them way behind. lol. He just isn't consistant and fans were calling for him to be replaced a few times this past season... and every season reall. |
Re: 3 reasons the Saints should be excited about undrafted free agent J.T. Barrett
The reason for the stat difference which I pointed out in an earlier post is because Hill only played 37 games while JT's stats were based on 50. That's an entire season folks.

He's a winner. Brings athleticism to the position. I don't think he could have found a better spot. But, he's a practice squad guy at best in the NFL.
