Fleener Dead Cap
The thought occurred to me that the Saints may make a move by releasing Fleecer later this year after training camp, depending on the progress of all of the rookie TEs.
Coby Fleener Contract Details, Salary Cap Breakdowns, Salaries, Bonuses | Spotrac Realistically, Fleecer plays this one year and he's out. Nonetheless, his production has not warranted his compensation, heretofore. Never can tell, though, if "The Wozinator" and Yelder show tremendous promise. There is reason SP has brought in so many TEs to evaluate. |
Re: Fleener Dead Cap
It looks like its actually more expensive to cut him than to keep him.

Re: Fleener Dead Cap
I looked a while back and I'm no expert but it looked like it'll be cheaper to let him hang around one more year, but I agree unless he makes a BIG step forward he gone after we win the Superbowl.

Personally, if gambling is in play, I'll put my money on Curtis Johnson coaching Fleener up on the fine art of catching the ball and on Ryan Neilsen coaching him up on being a better outside lineman. We came into this off season a play away from possibly advancing to the Super Bowl given another game. This roster is improved by the off-season. This roster is improved by the 2018 draft. This roster has been improved by the dynamic coaching additions on the defensive side. I have no doubt. 19-0 Baby! :bng: |

There's talent there even if Fleener didn't improve with the Drew Factor... Friendly FYI AG, Assistant Head Coach Dan Campbell is also the Tight Ends Coach; from what I'm told, CJ and Campbell overlap very little... And Nielsen is the defensive line coach... ;) Which leads me to a great segue, so glad we retained Campbell as he would be the HC should Payton get into some situation he couldn't perform his duties... Campbell won a Superbowl Ring with us as a Tight End, though he was injured at the time... |

Re: Fleener Dead Cap
This is how Fleener leaving the team this year would break out. If designated a Post June 1 cut his roster spot may have more value than his cap hit split between two years.

Therefore, to make this worthwhile he would have to be markedly better than Fleener and additionally better than any other player his additionally allocated salary also offset. Sorry, that makes no financial sense and is exactly why it won't happen. Flleener isn't going anywhere this season, like it or not. |
Re: Fleener Dead Cap
Fleener had a nice game against Washington, then that awful concussion ended his season the following week against the Rams. The bottom line is Fleener is very capable, I see the Saints holding on to him for now.

Re: Fleener Dead Cap
Lets trade him for a 7th round pick or someone's towel boy after 6/1!
