Fleener Dead Cap

The thought occurred to me that the Saints may make a move by releasing Fleecer later this year after training camp, depending on the progress of all of the rookie TEs.

Realistically, Fleecer plays this one year and he's out. Nonetheless, his production has not warranted his compensation, heretofore. Never can tell, though, if "The Wozinator" and Yelder show tremendous promise. There is reason SP has brought in so many TEs to evaluate.

It looks like its actually more expensive to cut him than to keep him.

I looked a while back and I'm no expert but it looked like it'll be cheaper to let him hang around one more year, but I agree unless he makes a BIG step forward he gone after we win the Superbowl.

And Fleener isn't total crap. He is leaps and bounds above any other option other than Ben Watson and Josh Hill. It would be crazy to throw away dead cap to gamble that one of a few UDFA's could outperform his capability.

Personally, if gambling is in play, I'll put my money on Curtis Johnson coaching Fleener up on the fine art of catching the ball and on Ryan Neilsen coaching him up on being a better outside lineman.

We came into this off season a play away from possibly advancing to the Super Bowl given another game. This roster is improved by the off-season. This roster is improved by the 2018 draft. This roster has been improved by the dynamic coaching additions on the defensive side.

I have no doubt.

19-0 Baby!

Agree with keeping Fleener around vs just outright release - unless there's a clubhouse problem...

There's talent there even if Fleener didn't improve with the Drew Factor...

Friendly FYI AG, Assistant Head Coach Dan Campbell is also the Tight Ends Coach; from what I'm told, CJ and Campbell overlap very little...

And Nielsen is the defensive line coach... ;)

Which leads me to a great segue, so glad we retained Campbell as he would be the HC should Payton get into some situation he couldn't perform his duties...

Campbell won a Superbowl Ring with us as a Tight End, though he was injured at the time...

I was distracted. My bad. I meant to say Campbell. I was pumping up Neilsen elsewhere.

Re: Fleener Dead Cap

This is how Fleener leaving the team this year would break out. If designated a Post June 1 cut his roster spot may have more value than his cap hit split between two years.

Pre-6/1 Release
2018 Dead Cap: $8,200,000
2018 Cap Savings: $-200,000

Pre-6/1 Trade
2018 Dead Cap: $4,800,000
2018 Cap Savings: $3,200,000

Post-6/1 Release
2018 Dead Cap: $5,000,000
2019 Dead Cap: $3,200,000
2018 Cap Savings: $3,000,000

Post-6/1 Trade
2018 Dead Cap: $1,600,000
2019 Dead Cap: $3,200,000
2018 Cap Savings: $6,400,000

Trying to make sense out of this statement. If Fleener is released the cap hit is $8.2 million regardless of release date. Either all in 2018 or $3.2 million carried over to the 2019 cap. So you are trying to say that his vacated roster spot would be worth $8.2 million in dead cap PLUS whatever contracted amount is allocated to his replacement, correct? That would only make sense if his replacement was worth more on the field than Fleener's dead cap hit PLUS whatever contracted amount said replacement commands.

Therefore, to make this worthwhile he would have to be markedly better than Fleener and additionally better than any other player his additionally allocated salary also offset.

Sorry, that makes no financial sense and is exactly why it won't happen. Flleener isn't going anywhere this season, like it or not.

Re: Fleener Dead Cap

Fleener had a nice game against Washington, then that awful concussion ended his season the following week against the Rams. The bottom line is Fleener is very capable, I see the Saints holding on to him for now.

Lets trade him for a 7th round pick or someone's towel boy after 6/1!
