Brown and Gold??
I think the Saints should look at putting a little brown in their lineup. The Browns have recently released a slew of players for cap reasons. They have, in essence, released their entire linebacking corp and we should take a look at these guys.
Dwayne Rudd, Earl Holmes, and especially Jamir Miller. Miller is the only Browns player to go to a Pro Bowl since 1999. In 2001 he had a, dare I say, Charlie Clemons year, registering 13 sacks as an outside linebacker. He ruptured his achilles last year and didn't play. Who knows if he'll return to full form, but if we get him cheap and have Hodge and Allen as well, this guy could turn out to be a bargain. Holmes is also the kind of stud the Saints could use up the middle. What do you guys think? |

If the Saints were to sign Miller, especially after signing Orlando Ruff, I think it will be all but certain that they will switch to a 3-4 defense. I would be ecstatic if this happened. The Saints have only had one truly successful year with the 4-3 defense and were always at their best back in the days of the dome patrol. Place Miller and Allen on the outside and Ruff and Hodge on the inside, and you have a pretty intimidating force there. Then we could use a 3-man rotation at DT with Jackson, Chase, and Kenny Smith to keep one man fresh at all times. If the Saints re-sign Whitehead, that would give them 3 capable DE\'s to rush the passer along with Grant and Howard. That could help your secondary, also because they\'ll be able to play more zone and man-to-man and not get burned as much as they did last year. Just an observation, but in my mind it works. LOL.

It works and it doesn\'t work. You\'re right about having the linebacking corp we would need IF we sign another stud linebacker. The 3-4 also alleviates the need for a new DT to replace hand, but Grady Jackson is a good fit as a nose guard. However, the \"anchors\" of our defense, Grant and Howard, are not really fit for the 3-4, so I\'m still not sure it would work.
Also, I think the Saints have had good years outside of the 4-3. We led the league in sacks for what, 3 straight years, using the 4-3. We\'ll never ever again have the kind of dominance up front as we did during the Dome Patrol days. At least, I don\'t forsee it. |
