Zach Strief officially announced as new Voice of the Saints, replacing Jim Henderson
 

Zach Strief has a habit of beating the odds.

He did so as a seventh-round draft pick in 2006 who lasted 12 seasons in the NFL and made almost 100 starts as a New Orleans Saints offensive tackle.

Strief, who retired in March, was given his next challenge Wednesday (July 25) when he was officially named the Saints' new radio play-by-play announcer despite having virtually no broadcast experience.

WWL-AM announced the news.

He's replacing the legendary Jim Henderson, who served as "Voice of the Saints" for 32 seasons before retiring Feb. 1.

He'll be putting that Northwestern University education to use. More broadcasters and journalists have earned their degrees from that school than any other.

Looking forward hearing a deeper perspective on the OL and perfect time for it. The blocking was outstanding last year but it was not discussed that much. Kamara and MI were great but it takes a lot of dirty duck feet kicking around to make them glide across the field. Not taking anything away from them but the blocking is the engine that makes it go.

I am also hoping that Zach can give some "street level" insight into defenses and pass rushing, as well. One would assume he knows a lot about it, having studied and faced off against so many different defenses and seriously talented pass rushers over the years. Someone like that who can spot the adjustments or changes during a game, made in the trenches on both sides, and highlight them for the viewers. Looking forward to that.

I'm SO relieved and glad that Joel Myers didn't get it. He has a monotone voice that simply puts me to SLEEP. No matter what is happening on the court, I get bored and tired when listening to him call Hornets games.

Don't forget that Zach's job will be play-by-play (which I actually think he'll handle fine), not color. He can throw in some, but he needs to focus more on the flow of the game. I'm actually hoping he let's some "homer" leak through as that brings across more passion.
