Why would we cut MT? Why would you even think that?

I could not understand when we signed Floyd. We already have five receivers. But I guess we're not playing our starters without pads.

Tate is an expert return specialists. Payton must not like what he is seeing so far.

Don't forget we have a 90 man roster and just lost one WR (Dural) to injury. It only makes sense that we bring in another. You can't run drills without enough bodies at each position. Someone stated we have "five receivers" and they couldn't understand why we would need more. We actually have ten receivers, including Coleman still on PUP, before Floyd. That's about right for training camp.

I don't expect to see much of Michael Thomas/Ginn in pre season games. Coleman is out (PUP) & Travis Dural was part of the training camp "rotation" but unfortunately now out with a broken arm. If you look around the league, it's common to see vets signed when injuries occur.

But again, I don't think either of these guys will stick.

Training Camp.

Training Camp players...

If they dont work, no big deal.

If they work - the staff looks like geniuses!

I think Brandon Tate actually has a better shot at making the roster than Michael Floyd thanks to the kick return experience.

Listening at Sean's post practice presser from a couple of days ago ... doesn't sound too pleased with the progress of the kick return/punt dept. We shall see.

Definitely something to keep an eye on in upcoming pre season games ... starting next week.

Or maybe there was an opening on the 90 man roster because Dural was placed on IR and it has NOTHING to do with Coleman. What happened to your new found positive attitude for this season?

;)

That wasn't the take I got from Payton's interview on NFL Network with Andrew Siciliano and Ladainian Tomlinson. He said his "Bachelor" comparison had everyone still in the running for return jobs (everyone got a rose). Nobody had done anything to be eliminated. I just listened to his live interview a few minutes ago with Bruce Murray and Phil Savage on their visit to Saints training camp and he said the same thing.

It isn't that he's not pleased with the return game, it's that it's difficult to pick the right returner(s) with so many good choices.

I had no idea Coleman was hurt. School and five days a week at the gym kept me busy. I have a week and a half left before going right back to school.

If he's in shape and focused on football, he could be a great pick up. If he's not, then he's a great camp body for the DBs to practice against.

If they are so good then why did he say Kamara was also not off the table as an option. Not many teams have their RB1 doing it. Kinda stupid to be honest but when WR's are muffing them like like last year you do what must be done.

I get signing more experience NFL wide receivers - better feel of QBs not named Brees, in team drills they don't have to develop WRs and learn the offense...

Why are people so confused about these signings? We have 90 spots and 2 wr’s just went down. Makes sense to bring 2 more in. I’d be shocked if either make the team.

I heard a couple of days ago there hasn't been a mishandled catch. And Kamara will be in play regardless of who wins the regular duties. If the Saints are in a situation where they need a huge special teams play he could very well be placed in there. In preparation for that event he'll need to practice as well as any other regular returner.

It's not going to happen. Here's a quote from a Rotoworld article discussing his release from the Vikings that describes why (from https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/player.../michael-floyd):

Quote:

He'd probably need a top-three receiver job to be worth keeping on the roster for another year, given that he's a total non-contributor on special teams. The 28-year-old shouldn't have too much trouble finding an organization willing to let him compete for a roster spot, though he'd have an easier time if he played special teams.
Barring injury the top 4 Saints WR spots are set (Thomas, Ginn, Meredith, Smith). The WR5 and possible WR6 spots will have to be special teams specialists.

There's no room for Floyd on the Saints. He's in training camp to get ready for the season, to put up some tape in August, to audition for the inevitiable WR2/3 job that'll open up somewhere in the league. Also training with the Saints gives him a familiarity with the offense strictly as an insurance policy for later in the season. He'll get cut and either get picked up off waivers by another squad, or will be on speed dial.

All the offensive skill positions at this point are down to battles for the bottom 5-7 of the 53 man roster. WR5/6, TE3/4, QB2/3, RB3/4. In the QB battle it's likely that the Saints will carry 3, with Hill playing Special Teams again, and Barrett going to the practice squad or being red shirted.

The bottom line though is that any veteran who doesn't play special teams need not bother to apply to play for the Saints this season. If you're not multiple/flexible in those last 5-7 slots, you won't be on the squad. The only exception to this may be Savage. And if Hill can demonstrate that he can tread water as QB2, not even then.

Good signing. It really elevates our entire receiving corps and weeds out the slower ones.

I like the idea of rolling out a 5-WR set with:

Thomas - 6’3”
Meredith - 6’3”
Floyd - 6’3”
Smith - 6’1”

And Kamara. I think it would be interesting.

Probably veteran insurance we won't need, but if for some reason we do they'll be there.

Re: Saints Sign WR Michael Floyd

Say it again, this is about getting the backup QBs some better talent so they can get a more accurate eval of their QBs Savage, Hill...

But Tate made an impression in the PR/KR duties, so he may want to put down another month's rent deposit so Kamara won't be the only capable returner...

Interesting for fantasy football maybe. But there are unanswered questions in real life.

#1 is what about Ted Ginn Jr? Ginn is the unquestioned WR2 on the squad. Also his dead cap number right now is $2.5 million, which would have to be paid whether he's a Saint or not. He's in the same situation as Floyd: veteran with somewhat limited special teams skills. But with a contract with guaranteed money with consequeces for him being released.

Next to that is the fact you are rolling out 3 guys who have been exposed to the offense for less than 3 months.

Finally while you have a bunch of big guys, who is really your speed guy?

I completely confuzzled as to how this would work. Ginn is faster. Ginn knows the offense. Ginn has a vibe with Brees. Ginn also can double as a PR/KR.

So what do you do as a GM in the real world?

This is how I see the roster unfolding by week #1.

M Thomas
Jr
Cam
Smith
Tate

BColeman will need to earn it on the field. Lots of talented guys in camp.

You took the words right out of my mouth...err, fingers. Only way Floyd wins a spot is if he takes it from Ginn. Only way that even gets considered is if Tre Smith proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that he can handle the deep threat duties. There's no way Payton goes into a season with a question mark at that position, it's too important to him. So, while I agree that on paper, or in a game of Madden that lineup looks impressive, it's also impractical right now. And keeping both Floyd and Ginn isn't really an option, due to the aforementioned lack of ST value.

BColeman isn't going to make it to the field. He was already competing for the WR5 spot. And he's not currently on the field. So there's no practice, no reps, no tape.
