It's happening...

Re: 2018 New Orleans Saints PreSeason
Our first PreSeason Opponent is Jacksonville which makes some of long-time fans reflect on one of the most unbelievable finishes to a game...
A finish that only long-time fans knew, predictably, was the only likely outcome for their New Orleans Saints... |

Anyone going to the game in JAX?

If Davenport and Anzalone are healthy, I'll be watching them closely on D vs the Jags.
On offense ... keep a lazy eye on Tre Smith & Boston. Special teams ... Tate. Edit - Jay Bromley in the trenches intrigues me. |

Don't expect to see Alex Okafor on many snaps tonight so hopefully Muhammad gets to showcase his development in year 2. Bromley & Woodrow should get plenty of snaps as well.
FWIW, I think TommyLee will get a lot of looks to show his worth ... for other teams. He's definitely a "bubble" guy. |

Re: 2018 New Orleans Saints PreSeason
Some players to look forward to getting snaps with the ones in PreSeason Game Two...
TE Dan Arnold - Arnold has the height, just not the sand, yet, Saints need at Tight End since departure of Graham; need to gauge his blocking and his ability to shield off and catch versus ones, playing with ones... LB Jayrone Elliot - Elliot has a history of jumping out on PreSeason film, just against reserves; he'll get some looks against the ones with the ones to see if last week was an aberration or if he's progressed, it's him vs Kikaha vs Loewen for a roster spot... RB Jonathan Williams has seemingly turned it on since that run up the middle against Jax (though Will Clapp was as impressive leading that wedge); Williams will get some looks with the ones to see if he can play at the next level of speed, competiton... DB Natrell Jamerson will get some looks at the tail-end with the ones this week; it might've been early, but the sluggish start allowing Bortles to march down the field may give Dennis Allen pause to see his defense perform; but Jamerson is a gamer and Robinson showed he's ready... OL Will Clapp, while Payton has changed in recent years playing rookies more, expect to see Clapp gets some snaps with the ones to test his playing, functional strength; how he fares may just determine if the Saints keep LeRibeus; departure of Fullington was huge for Clapp's prospects... WR Tre'Quan Smith was drafted to replace the aging Ted Ginn; but I'd expect to see that plan accelerated so Smith can improve his timing and earn the trust of the play-calling to geaux to him for third downs or downfield shots... QB Taysom Hill may get the next rotation with the ones if the coaches think he's ready - but if he's not, expect the Coaches to put a priority on seeing other positions perform with optimum surrounding talent... Others that may get tested against the ones are DT Devaroe Lawrence, NT Taylor Stallworth, NT Woodrow Hamilton... |

Mitch Loewin is another guy who is a threat. He's been lined up at DE & DT. Looked good vs the Jags in pre season #1. I want the best 53 on the final roster :bng:. |

Re: 2018 New Orleans Saints PreSeason
BY JOEL A. ERICKSON | JERICKSON@THEADVOCATE.COM AUG 16, 2018 - 12:45 PM The NFL preseason has a rhythm. An opener for teams to dip their toe in the water, a chance to get a quick look at the starters in the second, a full-on dress rehearsal in the third and a showcase for the guys competing for the final couple of roster spots in the finale. Sean Payton has been through this with the Saints a dozen times now. With each preseason game, there are certain checkpoints New Orleans is trying to hit, and Friday's preseason home opener against Arizona at 7 p.m. "I think, to some degree, we do," Payton said. "Then there are some things that maybe deviate and change. It might be the health of certain players. We'll have more players healthy for this game than we did for Jacksonville." The prime goal of preseason games is evaluation. The New Orleans coaching staff, like every staff in the NFL, is trying to identify its best 53 players for the season opener against Tampa Bay, and preseason games represent an opportunity to see how players respond under the lights. Injuries make those evaluations more difficult. Ten Saints sat out the first preseason game, a 24-20 win over the Jaguars, and missed their first chance to make an impression, although there are certain veterans and starters whose roster spots are ensured by their prior work in the NFL. With a few more players healthy this week, the Saints coaching staff will put a plan together to get some of them a chance to catch up in the evaluation process. "There'll be certain goals for the game," Payton said. "When we meet, we'd like to see these eight players playing earlier, to receive a good evaluation, that can vary each year based on who the players are." Another part of the process is shifting players around to see how they play against better competition. A young player who turned heads against the second or third string might be moved up to see how he handles an opponent's starters. Arizona will reportedly be doing a little bit of that with its high-profile first-round pick, quarterback Josh Rosen, on Friday night. Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks told reporters in Arizona earlier this week that Arizona planned to get Rosen some time with its starters because he was hamstrung by offensive line issues while playing with the second team in its preseason opener against the Chargers. New Orleans also has a quarterback situation that bears watching on Friday night. Drew Brees was held out of the preseason opener, but typically gets his first work in the second preseason game, and then there's the question of who comes in to take over for him once the future Hall of Famer trades his helmet for a baseball cap. Veteran Tom Savage took the starter's snaps against Jacksonville, but the Saints might want to see how second-year player Taysom Hill reacts against better competition after completing 8-of-9 passes for 72 yards and rushed seven times for 52 yards. Payton declined to say whether Brees will play or offer specifics on individual playing time after Wednesday's practice. "I want to challenge myself, I want to have the opportunity with some of our top guys and have the ability to continue to kind of stack success, but also prepare myself against the guys that are playing on Sundays," Hill said. For the entrenched starters, Friday's preseason game against the Cardinals is an opportunity to measure their progress as they try to get ready for the season opener. "It’s a game, it counts, but it’s just an extension of what we’re doing in practice," cornerback Marshon Lattimore said. "We’re just trying to see where we’re at, what level are we on when we’re going against another team. That’s really what we’re trying to see." The second preseason game also represents a chance for the coaching staff to evaluate the team's basic fundamentals, things like understanding and carrying out assignments, the tempo of getting in the huddle and getting to the line of scrimmage and avoiding penalties. Once the regular season starts, the Saints want those fundamentals to be involuntary reflexes, allowing the players to focus on specific game plans and preparation for individual opponents. "I know this, we have a lot of work to do," Payton said. "Fortunately, we have a good month here before we're playing our first game.' |

Re: 2018 New Orleans Saints PreSeason
Ramcyzk being better in Year 2 is scary. Peat (when at LG), Unger & Ram are unreal & Armstead is a beast when he's actually on the field. Warford is the weakest link on that starting 5, so that is insane. The only question mark is who will be the back-ups, and we have quality depth there too. Bushrod is in & I believe Clapp will have to be considering he'd be gobbled up from the P.S. with a quickness.
All of our RBs should look good in MIs absence, but when he's back he's gonna think he's back at Bama with this year's run blocking. Whipping some tail. |
Re: 2018 New Orleans Saints PreSeason
Speaking of Ramczyk...
...A pair of New Orleans Saints offensive linemen were honored in Pro Football Focus’s preseason Team of the Week: starting right tackle Ryan Ramczyk [PFF Grade 96.1], and reserve interior offensive lineman Will Clapp [PFF Grade 77.1]. New Orleans was the only team to have multiple representatives on the offensive line... |
Re: 2018 New Orleans Saints PreSeason
IT'S GOING TO BE INTERESTING AFTER ALL THE TEAMS CUT DOWN TO 53 AT THE SAME TIME. ROSTERS WILL BE IN A STATE OF FLUX FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS.
|
Re: 2018 New Orleans Saints PreSeason
Ramczyk (elite from Day 1) is only 24 & Leonard (he could turn into a solid pro) 21. These guys have the potential to solidify the O line for the next decade.
