If anyone might be going from "pencil" to "pen" on the Saints' 53-man roster projection in the first preseason game, the two leading candidates are WR/KR Brandon Tate and DL Mitchell Loewen. Tate, who was just signed last week and quickly emerged as the front-runner for the kickoff job, returned the Saints' first kickoff 36 yards. Loewen, who earned a roster spot last year before going on injured reserve with an ankle injury in Week 3, has five tackles, two tackles for loss and a QB hit in the first 40 minutes.

Taysom Hill was arguably the Saints' most impressive backup QB candidate in Thursday's preseason opener, going 8-of-9 for 72 yards in the second half and running the ball seven times for 52 yards (including a 3-yard TD run). The second-year pro started a little shaky, nearly throwing an interception and taking a couple sacks. And the Saints would probably like to see him stay in the pocket a little more often. But if they believe Hill can move the chains one way or the other, he has a chance to beat out veteran Tom Savage for the No. 2 job behind Drew Brees.

Does the fourth quarter of the first preseason game matter? It does to the Saints' backup RB candidates. Rookie Boston Scott got the Saints down to the 1-yard line with a nifty 7-yard run. And third-year pro Jonathan Williams had a couple nice runs, including a 4-yard TD run (though he appeared to commit a holding penalty earlier on a kickoff return). Veteran Terrance West played earlier in the game but didn't stand out too much with five carries for 10 yards. … In other words, the competition is still wide open.

Aside from the QBs, RBs, Mitchell Loewen and Brandon Tate, some other standout performances for the Saints in Thursday's 24-20 come-from-behind win over the Jaguars: Fifth-year veteran LB/DE Jayrone Elliott had 2.5 sacks and two forced fumbles – the kind of performance that "bubble players" like him need to make in the preseason. Second-year DL Devaroe Lawrence had two sacks and three QB hits. Rookie WR Tre'Quan Smith continued his impressive summer with four catches for 48 yards. Two other negatives: Third-year safety Vonn Bell missed a tackle near the goal line on a Jags TD, and rookie QB J.T. Barrett didn't see wide-open RB Boston Scott in the end zone before taking a sack.

I was impressed with Taysom Hill as well last night. He runs the ball way too much for my liking, but his passes were pretty good. Long way to go before he's a complete NFL QB, but definitely has a ton of talent.

Other than the names already mentioned, I thought undrafted rookie Taylor Stallworth had a pretty good game.

Hopefully we see RB Jonathan Williams go with the "ones & twos" next pre sesason game. He needs another good look.

Tre' ... has good hands. He'll help this offense in 2018.
David Oneymata ... rhino strong. He'll become a monster when he truly understands the game.
Rankins ... solid.

Taysom Hill just looks so unnatural playing QB. I don’t mean that in a “Wow this guy is freakishly talented” kind of way. He just doesn’t look like he belongs at all.

I don't know. There was definitely rawness, but seemed to be some pocket presence, scrambling ability (maybe too much reliance on this right now), and he throws a ball on a rope.

I'll say one thing, he should be the holder on every kick attempt in case there's a need for a fake.

I was wrong about Hill. He is a gamer. He very may wind up starting somewhere in the next couple years. You can tell he’s been studying Drew. Eyes don’t come off the ball when he’s hit in the backfield after a pass.
I can see why all the beat writers have been down on Lattimore all camp.
We couldn’t get much pressure.
Positive takes... we have depth and seem to have found a return game. Kamara and Ingram look to have picked up where they left off.

What beat writers have been down on Lattimore? All I've heard are things like how he's shut down WR's on one-on-one drills to the point the QB couldn't even throw the ball on multiple occasions. They've said he's doing things they've never seen before like that. Where are you getting your news?

You have the time to share a post that cites other media heads are down on Lattimore, but you don't have time to find even a tweet to back what you're saying?!?

I read every story I can find on the Saints. Unlike you, I have plenty of time. I haven't come across any writer dogging Lattimore at all, "beat writer" or not.

Where are you coming from?

It's because it isn't there. He skims over crap (if even that deep) and sees where Lattimore got beat by Michael Thomas a couple of times in practice and then projects it to being all of the media are down on Lattimore. If he'd ever read an entire article he'd see where Lattimore held his own against perhaps the best WR in football on other drill runs.

There was one guy, I can’t remember which one, who had a training camp update one day and mentioned that Lattimore has been giving up quite a few catches. I remember reading that but it was just the one guy’s editorializing.

I always say, if it’s one position I know it’s corner. Lattimore is the least of my concerns. Crawley is the one who needs to get his head around on deep throws and catch the ball when it hits his hands.

I was very impressed with the way Maulet got his head around and tracked the ball on that one go route he defended last night.

Maulet has potential to make Crawley a very, valuable back up corner.

Yeah I read it too. The writer or whatever said something like that then finished it with, "but I'm not worried" or something.

Re: Post Game Saints vs Jaguars Observations

Some thoughts about last night's game:
  • Though the RB, WR, OL, were "1's", Brees sat so I'm not real panicked by the blasé offensive performance...

...after all, the first series saw Tom Savage throwing to Garret Griffin to convert a 3rd down against the Jags "No. 1's"...

  • Brings me to this - Payton & Co isolate QB vs QB in with the same variables (i.e. plays, personnel) so they can get a better sense of these reserve QBs...

...and on that note, comparing the two QBs styles is night and day - Savage is a conservative Brad Johnson style while Taysom Hill was more of a, well, TBD...

...what jumped out at me was Savage played smart, threw tentatively, whereas Hill threw with more authority, made bone-headed mistakes...

...and if Payton likes to gamble in drafts, why did we not spend last year's sixth round pick on Chad Kelly from Ole Miss??? He's looked great in Denver ...

  • Not ready to jump on the J. Williams band wagon, as I want to see him against the 1's; but Will Clapp, now, well he looked like a man leading that charge...

  • Brandon Tate wasn't consistently awesome in the return game, but if he can get it past the thirty or get fifteen yards a return - he's got a job...

  • And where was Tommylee last night?!? Does it matter if he can't get regular season looks?

  • Mitchell Loewen (not Lavin, Joel Myers you ****ing twit) is an active, leave it out there player; but he got hurt again playing that style?!?

  • To see Patrick Robinson play with instincts, turning his head on the ball and knock away a sure touchdown was a thing of beauty - really liking his re-signing...

  • Demario Davis is supposed to be a smart linebacker; so I get needing a learning curve, but that was about as dumb a play on the goal line as I've seen...

  • Our fourth Nose Tackle, Stallworth, is better than most team's starters - seriously; Loomis should be busy next week picking up third day draft picks...

  • Yeah, it's early, but I'm saying it - Dan Arnold is making this roster; yeah, he needs weight, but his key block sprung Scott to the goal line...

...and as only a rookie, he's already a mismatch in the passing game and has the best hands of all our Tight Ends already...

  • Going back to Clapp, he had the reserve units lined up and played well even against a few 1's last night - I like his chances of making this team...

  • Did anyone notice that Jamerson was the next cornerback up when P.J. Williams got shaken up last night? Like Jamerson's chances on that left side?

  • Colton Jumper must've been real tight, because that's got to be a record for missed tackles for a Mike Nolan-coached linebacker...

  • In my mind either a strong safety or middle linebacker should be your best, fundamentally sound tacklers on the team - WTF is Vonn Bell doing?

  • Seriously, seriously, seriously think Natrell Jamerson needs to see time at strong safety - Vonn Bell is gonna cost us games this year...

  • David Onyemata is an absolute freaking beast; que the sound of the apologist for Rankins among the announcers - we'll see what develops...

  • Trey Hendrickson has an incredible motor; right now, I'd say his ceiling is easily Will Smith, and that's not too bad for a late third round pick...

  • Did anybody catch Alvin Kamara throw a pass block on not one, but two Jacksonville No. 1 defenders? Did you also see Payton play it safe and sit him?

  • CantGuardMike is the early favorite for team MVP for this team's season; that was two of the best CBs in the NFL he text-booked last night...

...if not Mike Thomas, watch for Marcus Williams - this is a hombre en fuego, mann auf einer mission, a man in the zone...

I can't help but want to WIN, so every year I get caught up in that and fail to recognize it's preseason and winning isn't (necessarily) the point.

I was pleased in general but our LBers didn't impress.

We're going to cut a lot of people who might have made the team a couple years ago.

And I don't care. I want Hill to be Drew's backup. Logic be damned. LOL

Taysom Hill didn't impress me. he look like he cant diagnose the defense to determine where to go with the ball with a better opportunity of success.

V Bell cant read and react fast enough to be a starter

Why is Devante Harris still on the team? Although I think both of the penalties thrown against him were bogus, I just cant see him making the final 53

With all that athleticism I bet if he was black you would like him.

I liked Hill, he seemed to play with attitude and little bit of a chip on his shoulder.
Still a little raw around the edges but the talent is definitely there.
I think he's going to be an excellent QB.

Re: Post Game Saints vs Jaguars Observations

I thought that Lawrence, the DT, had some plays, and Clapp showed some promise as the C.

It was nice seeing P-Rob and Bushrod back in the black & gold, and both performed well IMO.

Savage was way too conservative with his throws, and he failed to pick up some open receivers further down the progression. On the other hand, he looked more confident than Hill, but he was playing with the starting offense, so he was in a much better place to perform.

It sure looks like the defensive line is going to have nice rotational depth, but I'm looking forward to seeing Davenport and Okafor at the DE to see where they are at... Jordan is a given. It'll be interesting to see where Kikaha winds up playing when all is said and done - he did look pretty good on couple of plays, but the competition is tough.

I find it strange that they lined up Davis at Will, Klein at Mike, and Anzalone at Sam. I would've thought that their best fits would've been Davis at Mike, Klein at Sam and Anzalone at Will. But I guess Nolan knows couple of things more than I do about LBs.

Overall, very positive first glimpse of the potential this team has.

They have all said that Lattimore was beat by Michael Thomas on a play or two here and there. And he was. But, Thomas faces him most every one on one and is one of the very best in the game. He will win his share. But what you choose to ignore are the other 95% of the plays where Lattimore dominates in practice.

You have always had a tendency to gravitate to the lowest common denominator as far as opinion of our Saints. You hear one negative and it dominates your narrative from there on out.
