First-round pick Marcus Davenport got his first taste of regular-season action on Sunday against Tampa Bay.

Davenport, who battled a pulled groin for most of training camp but returned in time for the final preseason game, rotated with Alex Okafor at right defensive end and played 23 snaps in his NFL debut.

The rookie came away with one tackle, a quarterback hit and a pass defended, and after he watched the film, Davenport saw a lot that could improve.

"I want to play better," Davenport said. "I just feel like I have to play more violent and be able to stop the run better."

One of Davenport's better rushes ended in a flag. Bearing down on Buccaneers quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, Davenport's helmet made contact with Fitzpatrick's helmet, and he was hit with a 15-yard penalty for roughing the quarterback.

"It happened," Davenport said. "There's not much I can say about it, I'll just try to make sure it doesn't happen again."

Davenport also came close to making the big play the Saints defense desperately needed and never got. After reading a screen correctly, he got both hands on a Fitzpatrick pass from a couple of yards away, but he wasn't able to haul it in.

"I should have had that," Davenport said. "I'll get it next time."

Play more 'violent', I'd like Davenport to play like he's got a pair...

Like a pair of first round picks invested in him...

Or........make a tackle, create some pressure, get your hand up and deflect a pass, and maybe, just maybe, get a sack. :)

I think defensive ends/pass rushers have the steepest learning curve in the pros. They have to elevate their game another notch considering the speed of the NFL. I think of guys like Beasley and Clowney who really struggled early. Even if Davenport does work out, I think there's a good chance it's going to take some time.

I also think it will take some time but I like the mind set. You have to put it all on the line if you want to be successful you can't care about maybe getting a flag. Don't do something foolish but let them know you are coming for them. Just like in life if you let someone disrespect you or push you around you are at fault as much as your opponent.

If anyone noticed the bucs defense all of them were so much more wreck less than our de. They gave up the body for busting up plays and had injuries to prove they were going to do what it took to leave with a win or for at least a week that the bucs were back in the fold for legitimacy in the south and they did one beat us down I still say they lose this week and return to dumpster

And yet, if it hadn't been for that ill-timed fumble by a RB who hadn't been on our squad for less than a week we would have most likely won the game anyway. That play was a back-breaker. In our Super Bowl year we had a game just like this one against Miami with the difference being we got the turnover and not the other team. Anything can happen in one game, especially the first game of the season.

True but the defense gave up 48 points & torched for over 500 yards of total offense at home. At this level of football, that can't happen against anyone.

Can we agree that this was an inexcusable performance for game 1 vs a divisional opponent.

No, the defense did not give up 48 points. A RB on the offense with less than a week with the squad caused the OFFENSE to give up seven of the points.

Ok, allow me to retort.

Tampa score 27 points before they punted. If not for a missed TB FG, we gave up 44 points at home.

On that 3rd and 11, a 35 year old rolls out on you to rip your heart out. Play contain defense and spy Fitz ! Why is it so hard for Dennis Allen to play defense in late game situations? I can go on and on.

The final score says Tampa slung 48 points on you & that's embarrassing.

On to Cleveland though ...

Exactly, that 3rd and 11 we only rushed 3 guys. That means 8 in coverage and the majority were stood at the first down marker, yet when Fitz started running there was no one within 20 yards of him.

Shoddy play calling and execution all around for Allen

Davenport is going to be a monster. Wait and see. When he starts getting pressure on that other side and they can't continue to put all the focus on Jordan...look out.

Agreed.

His "twitch" and acceleration is freakish. I know many may be enamored by sack numbers but the way he moves across the field & navigates through traffic is scary. Once he polishes up the technique ... oh boy.

True, but the Rams sure came out and made a statement in Game One...

Without most of their starters logging a preseason snap; second half adjustments against Raiders equally impressive...

That didn't happen with our Saints Defense...

Tampa Bay came in with a perfect game plan and the perfect QB to execute the plan and he had the perfect day and every break went their way ... including the Thomas TD that the officials blew.

It was one game. I guarantee you every single person on the roster and staff have placed that game completely behind them. Every game is a brand new game. Only losers dwell upon the past.

We blew the first game. It happens.......every year apparently. It sure does make the rest of the schedule more demanding and we better execute flawlessly each and every game.

Davenport will never justify two first round picks; just another stupid draft move on Payton's part; but this kid has got to get more pressure, sacks...

FWIW, Khalil Mack started all 16 games as a rookie and had only 4 sacks. Cam Jordan ...15 games played as a rookie and 1 sack. Fast forward them both ... now ELiTE at the position.

Davenport's time will come. I've seen enough "flashes" to spot a potential beast in the making. Give the kid time to polish his craft and technique. If he doesn't have a single sack this season, it could still be a great pick.
