Re: First-round pick Marcus Davenport feels like he has to 'play more violent' after Saints debut
BY JOEL A. ERICKSON | jerickson@theadvocate.com Sep 10, 2018 - 3:59 pm
First-round pick Marcus Davenport got his first taste of regular-season action on Sunday against Tampa Bay. Davenport, who battled a pulled groin for most of training camp but returned in time for the final preseason game, rotated with Alex Okafor at right defensive end and played 23 snaps in his NFL debut. The rookie came away with one tackle, a quarterback hit and a pass defended, and after he watched the film, Davenport saw a lot that could improve. "I want to play better," Davenport said. "I just feel like I have to play more violent and be able to stop the run better." One of Davenport's better rushes ended in a flag. Bearing down on Buccaneers quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, Davenport's helmet made contact with Fitzpatrick's helmet, and he was hit with a 15-yard penalty for roughing the quarterback. "It happened," Davenport said. "There's not much I can say about it, I'll just try to make sure it doesn't happen again." Davenport also came close to making the big play the Saints defense desperately needed and never got. After reading a screen correctly, he got both hands on a Fitzpatrick pass from a couple of yards away, but he wasn't able to haul it in. "I should have had that," Davenport said. "I'll get it next time." |
It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

Play more 'violent', I'd like Davenport to play like he's got a pair...
Like a pair of first round picks invested in him... |

Or........make a tackle, create some pressure, get your hand up and deflect a pass, and maybe, just maybe, get a sack.

I think defensive ends/pass rushers have the steepest learning curve in the pros. They have to elevate their game another notch considering the speed of the NFL. I think of guys like Beasley and Clowney who really struggled early. Even if Davenport does work out, I think there's a good chance it's going to take some time.

I also think it will take some time but I like the mind set. You have to put it all on the line if you want to be successful you can't care about maybe getting a flag. Don't do something foolish but let them know you are coming for them. Just like in life if you let someone disrespect you or push you around you are at fault as much as your opponent.

If anyone noticed the bucs defense all of them were so much more wreck less than our de. They gave up the body for busting up plays and had injuries to prove they were going to do what it took to leave with a win or for at least a week that the bucs were back in the fold for legitimacy in the south and they did one beat us down I still say they lose this week and return to dumpster

Anything can happen in one game, especially the first game of the season.

Can we agree that this was an inexcusable performance for game 1 vs a divisional opponent. |
