I don't think there is a tougher job in the NFL than being a placekicker. It's so easy to let one bad kick go to your head, and then you've missed another one, and another one. Even great kickers have gone through streaks like that before they've regained their confidence(or possibly were never the same like Vanderjagt). It's really tough... I know we benefited from his screwups... but I feel bad for the guy. The brutality of fans doesn't make it any easier.

I don't even think clutch is the right term to use in terms of what makes a good kicker. Like someone can make clutch kicks..... but it's like when they miss one it may still end up in a downward spiral. To be an NFL kicker with long term success, you have to have a teflon personality.

Honestly if I were an NFL coach I might be tempted to have the kicker wear headphones and basically put into solitary confinement. Hopefully the kicker doesn't even know the score. Then when it's time to kick, someone just taps on the shoulder and he runs out there, hopefully makes the kick/extra point, and then goes back into solitude.

Glad he missed but you do feel bad for the guy. What if you were his Mom. The NFL is tough hope he brings it around against some of our opponents if he is not booted out.

I heard today that he's been trying to battle through a groin injury. They said that the Browns will probably let him go with an injury settlement.

I don’t get joy out of winning because of someone else’s failure. A win is a win and I will take it though.
That was pretty cutthroat of Payton to call him out like that by going for 2.
It’s one thing to call out another teams offense or defense but I have never heard of a coach icing a kicker for an EXTRA POINT that far in advance. He went for two knowing that kicker would be sweating the tying extra point.

He went for two because at that point in the game a single extra point means nothing. It had nothing to do with icing the kicker. You ALWAYS go for two there to attempt to go up by six which means a TD by itself cannot beat you.

You've got one job to do! BS!!! Everyone misses sometime. It's like the great QB's they miss just not very often. If you get a base hit every third down at bat you're doing great in baseball and they get paid more. Lutz was a freaking gift from Harbaugh that will benefit us for years. We got darn lucky but he still needed training and we had to bring in a specialist to get him right.

I feel bad for kickers. But at least in football they kick from the middle of the field. In rugby you have to kick from the side lines on a consistent basis. Wherever you crossed the plane of the goal line then you come straight back from there.
