RB Dwayne Washington Promoted from Practice Squad

Big, strong and fast RB who could possibly supplant the underwhelming Gillislee and Williams.

Re: RB Dwayne Washington Promoted from Practice Squad

Help me out here ...

I'm looking at JP's most recent practice squad roster. Why do we need two TE's or two RB's on the p/s roster? Boston Scott is there ... are the Saints coaches really plan on playing Dwayne Washington??

So we need a back up RB for our back up RB on the practice squad??

Beastmode 09-28-2018 10:59 AM

Re: RB Dwayne Washington Promoted from Practice Squad

Boston Scott needs to be on the field. Insane we put Marcus Murphy out there and this guy can't even get in the batters box. I normally trust Peyton but something is not right. Maybe an attitude situation. Only thing I can make of it. Nothing in PS said he could not handle returns, catching or running.

Re: RB Dwayne Washington Promoted from Practice Squad

If Boston Scott was ready he’d be playing. He probably hasn’t grasped the playbook. Sure there’s some areas where we question Payton’s personnel decisions, but I don’t question who he thinks is ready to execute his offense.

Williams and Gillesie have done nothing. Surprised after Williams' pretty fair preseason.
Gotta be something up with Scott

MG was only here for what a week? It's not the playbook.

Clearly Scott is not impressing the coaches.

With the absence of Mark Ingram, have you noticed how much we pass the football? One could guess that Scott may be a liability & still unproven in pass protection.

One missed assignment, open shot on Brees ... game over.

If they didn't feel he had promise he wouldn't be on the practice squad.

Yup. I said the exact same thing yesterday. It doesn't matter how talented you are or how well you grasp the playbook if you are not ready to handle pass protection duties.

Apparently Gillislee is more comfortable with the terminology of the West Coast Offense than Boston Scott. It’s not unusual for players coming from a spread offense in college to struggle their rookie year learning a more complex system... We just normally hear more about QB’s struggling with it.

Re: RB Dwayne Washington Promoted from Practice Squad

I’ll take his potential on just a few plays over what the rest of these RBs have been doing. I don’t care if that have to tell him which way to run or what route to run. What do they have to lose? We might as well not even have Gillislee or Williams on the game day roster. Maybe Scott isn’t the answer but we know for certain that Gillislee and Williams aren’t either.

Re: RB Dwayne Washington Promoted from Practice Squad

Is he really that useful in pass protection? He's like Sproles size. Pretty much worthless. Whoever gets back there is running over him. 200lbs going against 230 plus in most cases is not going to work out.

There is something else going on IMO. He did something that pissed off someone because it's not talent. Normally Peyton pulls RB's that fumble. Not MG. He threw him back out there.

I can't imagine Boston Scott ever "pissing off" anyone. My niece knows him from La. Tech and says everyone loves him. He's is a very bright and religious young man. He'd be one of the last players to fall on any coaches bad side.

It is extremely common for players to spend their entire first year on a practice squad. Right now the Saints just want a temporary RB on the 53 man roster until Ingram returns. Then that player will simply be cut. It is far too much of a risk exposing a player that could have a future by activating from the practice squad and then trying to waive and retain him to free the spot back up for Ingram.

It perfectly logical.

Oh, and even small backs can chip a pass rusher enough to be effective as long as they are up to speed on reading the threat.

exactly. Scott had what, 15 touches in the last PS game?

Doubt that he's hurt or we'd stash him on IR.

Yes because religious people never piss people off.
Can’t possibly be his character since he’s religious.

Regardless of his religion, he is a high character, polite and hard-working young man. Much in the same mold as Ben Watson. Why the vitriol over mentioning his religion? It's something he doesn't hide and surely at least a small factor in his overall character.

Re: RB Dwayne Washington Promoted from Practice Squad

I do tend to agree with someone here who wears a beanie.
Either or both Williams and Gillislee are totally expendable once Ingram gets back. One will definitely be gone. Scott may be insurance stowed on the practice squad in case if injury. No since bringing him up now and risk having to try and get him back on the PS if need be.
I would like to see him. The other two are worthless.

The Dude 09-28-2018 03:38 PM

Re: RB Dwayne Washington Promoted from Practice Squad

On the other hand I don’t see why he would necessarily need to go back to the PS. We have 3 backs now, 4 if you count Line. Ditch MG and Williams keep Scott.
Which brings me back to thinking he’s just not ready yet.

Edit
Just saw Williams got the boot to make room.

Peyton has never mentioned anything about his blocking or any other problem. He has said several times though Meredith was not ready, poor timing and routes. Not buying the blocking stuff. He knows how to block. Been doing it a long time.

Not that it has anything to do with the subject at hand, but would you care to post some links to where Payton stated that Meredith "was not ready, poor timing and routes." I'll give you "not ready". That's why he wasn't active until week three. But, the "poor timing and routes" stuff has me stumped. I seemed to have missed Payton's ever mentioning that. I would appreciate seeing the links, though. You know how big a fan I am of Meredith's.

Thanks in advance, Beast!

Re: RB Dwayne Washington Promoted from Practice Squad

Zach Strief told me when talking about Rick Leonard that he told Leonard "that being on the practice squad is not a bad thing." The same holds true for any of the players on the practice squad. For one reason or another they are not quite ready. It has nothing to do with how attitude or anything like that.

ChrisXVI 09-28-2018 04:19 PM

Re: RB Dwayne Washington Promoted from Practice Squad

I don’t think it has anything to do with character issues or blocking for Boston Scott. Everybody learns differently and going from a spread offense where the play calls are as simple as “Early 94” to one of the most complex systems in the league with play calls like “Gun Flex Right Stack 394 Dragon Smoke Kill Turbo Sucker Right” is probably a little daunting.

Yes we all know you met Zack Streif and how proud we all are of you.

Ready or not Scott will get his chance if there is an injury. The running game as it is now just isn’t cutting it.
How many players have the Saints brought up from the practice squad that wound up being a difference maker? Just curious because IDK.

Thank you, Dude!

And I agree that it would take something like an injury to bring him up.

As for difference makers from the practice squad ... I can't think of any. I know my very personal friend, Strief, was a practice squad player for most of his rookie year, but even after being brought up he only started one of nine games active.

:D

Didn’t Pierre Thomas sit on the practice squad for a very short time? I know he went undrafted...

Yes, in 2007 for the first three games. He hardly contributed until the last game of the season with 226 total yards on 20 carries for 105 and 12 receptions for another 121 in yardage.

The birth of a stud!

Running backs not playing is usually related to learning oass protections.. it so I've been told

How much does Coleman being gone do you think is
Attributed to the fact we can’t seem to get the running game going? Yes, we don’t have Ingram but I figured Williams and MG would at least contribute.

A lot. Peyton talked about this in the presser today. WR blocking is critical. They have to learn the defensive packages each week and know where the force will be coming from. It's a weakness right now outside of MT. CM can barely stand up so he won't be blocking anyone with authority like Coleman.

Merideth too! He was on his way to being a superstar with the Bears he’s bound to bounce back here and become a huge part of our offense. We have historically had awesome success when we take a gamble and sign these players who have only been heald back by injury. It’s uncanny how well they bounce back. I just wish we would have given him a huge contract!
Leanord is the one that one of our esteemed members who hangs out with Streif is so high on because Strief told him so.

Zach is pure class, so pretty sure he was towing the company line w/his bud. But I'd go by what the coaches think about ol' Slick Rick's amazing work ethic.
