Refs Flag Excessive Celebration After Drew Brees Breaks All-Time Passing Yardage Mark [UPDATE]

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Joe Tessitore’s incredulity is perfect. It’s one of the signature records in football, and the NFL and the Pro Football Hall of Fame participated in the celebration, and it still drew a friggin’ flag. Never change, NFL. https://deadspin.com/refs-flag-exces...aks-1829613626...

Brady would have whined enough they’d have thrown a flag on the opposing team!

They need a rule change for record breaking plays. They are celebrating because something EXCESSIVE happened. It warrants it.

If you read the entire article you'd see that the flag was NOT thrown for excessive celebration. It was thrown on Tre'Quan Smith for "taunting" in the end zone. The celebration had nothing to do with the flag. Rookie mistake.

Of course, they run a story that was totally wrong and readers believe it as gospel.

UPDATE: Kevin Seifert of ESPN says the penalty was called on Tre’Quan Smith for taunting, and was not for excessive celebration:

According to the NFL, the penalty was for a taunt that occurred in the corner of the end zone — and not for excessive celebration.

Figures. No way they get penalized for that. Seen it many times. Never a flag.

That's good to hear because that would be absurd

I mean they stopped the game and gave him an award and let him kiss his wife and kids. If that were the case The NFL should be flagged.
