USA Today/Saints Wire: Deion Sanders: Saints should trade for Patrick Peterson

The New Orleans Saints are rolling into their bye week at 4-1, but a Pro Football Hall of Famer thinks they can still get better. Deion Sanders, one of the greatest to ever do it, aired his wish for the Saints to add Arizona Cardinals All-Pro cornerback Patrick Peterson during his 21st & Prime segment on NFL Network.

This is all just Prime Time’s grandstanding for the cameras, but it’s fun to think about. Peterson just turned 28 and is in the prime of his career. His Cardinals are 1-4 and reeling, with offensive coordinator Mike McCoy squandering All-Pro caliber tailback David Johnson’s talents. But the defense has largely played well and Peterson is showing no signs of slowing down.

No, the Cardinals won’t trade Peterson. But, again, it’s fun to think about. The only real draft capital the Saints have to offer is their second round draft choice in 2019, though they have all of their picks in 2020. Having already moved future assets for Teddy Bridgewater and Marcus Davenport, it’s a hard sell to consider doing it again for Peterson. On the other hand, they may as well go all in, right?

And, of course, the Saints won’t trade for Peterson. If you aren’t with the movement yet, however, you should know that it’s fun to think about. New Orleans has worked out almost 20 different free agent defensive backs the last few weeks after Patrick Robinson was lost to an ankle injury, and didn’t find any appealing options. Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore exited Monday’s game with a concussion and there’s no telling when he’ll be ready to return. In the interest of fun and providing a stronger secondary than P.J. Williams and Ken Crawley could produce, I’ll add my voice to Prime Time’s calls for another big Saints trade.

Would be nice. Anyone we can offer...?

I wouldn’t be mad. Might be kind of hard financially though. Michael Thomas will command a big contract extension after this season and it’s imperative to re-sign Ingram.

Did we need him this past Monday night?

I guess if we don't take into account the salary cap, the amount of compensation we would lose getting a player of that caliber or just reality in general then it's a great idea. Thanks Deion.

Add him to "IF YOU SAY IT ENOUGH IT WILL COME TRUE" roster along with Jimmy G and Malcom Butler.

Imagine Peterson and Lattimore as our starting CBs. wow
Two corners that don't need safety help and QBs are afraid throwing in their direction. Changes offensive game plan completely. No more big plays... Adding Peterson can make some other guys look better than they actually are.
If Saints didn't have Lattimore then signing Peterson wouldn't make that big difference on the field. But we are talking about two shutdown corners here. If we are all in this season then go for it.

Didn’t have Latt pretty much the entire game. Best secondary looked all season. PJ looked like a starter. Crawleys name didn’t get mentioned much, which is a good thing. Scheme and coaching is where (I) think is the biggest concern.

Hill is slowing turning into really good trade bait. His stock rises after EVERY game. I believe Drew’s end date and Teddy’s contract are the only
readon Hill stays a Saint. I personally would rather see Hill stay on the squad, but Peterson would be a huge aqusition to this D.

Yes it is (scheme and coaching) but it was also Alex Smith who just refuses to take deep shots (our weakness) or riskier throws. D-line has to play lights out every game (like it did monday night) in order for our secondary to look good.

Totally different circumstances, but remember Smith and V. Davis are a major reason Brees doesn’t have a second ring. Some teams and players have our #. Different time and day I guess.

I don't think we can afford Patrick Peterson. We have too many contracts that we need to pay coming up and let's get our young guys some valuable experience and find out if they're worth a paycheck.

Re: USA Today/Saints Wire: Deion Sanders: Saints should trade for Patrick Peterson

Dennis Allen would probably only bring him in for run support anyway so it would be pointless.

I could care less about whether or not Justin Hardee is a starter in this league if we can get Patrick Peterson. That’s just me though. If you want talent you can’t be afraid to pay for it. I guarantee Brees takes a pay cut to make that happen.

We have no picks to offer. But thank goodness we got our backup qb

Re: USA Today/Saints Wire: Deion Sanders: Saints should trade for Patrick Peterson

It would be nice, but I don't want to see the Saints fall back into the dead-money hole they're just getting out of.

It's just one player, and while a very good player - he is potentially only one play away from the IR. Therefore, I'd much rather see them get the most out of players they have at the moment.

K Major 10-12-2018 09:16 AM

Re: USA Today/Saints Wire: Deion Sanders: Saints should trade for Patrick Peterson

I think there is a slim to no chance Peterson signs in NO however I'd be elated if we could. I can count the # of CB's on one hand who can track any #1 WR every Sunday. I'm no LSU homer however Patrick has consistently ranked top 10 every year at one of the most difficult positions to play at this level. Pro Bowler year after year who also returns punts effectively. Boxes are all checked with his level of talent.

Don't think we'd ever sign him but I'd be telling a lie to say I wouldn't want us to go after him in 2018.

But like what some of the others have stated, with upcoming contracts & hopefully retaining Teddy B ... it will be challenging to sign Pat.

It will be extremely difficult to win a Lombardi with the guys we have @ #2. I just don't trust Crawley/PJ & what's behind them on those boundaries.

Don't count on Bridgewater being the second coming. So far he's looked good against second string preseason players. Just sayin'...

So am I for Peterson? HELL YES. But for whom...?

Might as well offer our 2nd round pick and just draft for depth next year.

I don’t think we need to send a 1st for him. I think he could be had for a 2nd. Maybe two 2nds.

I think Seahawks asked second rounder for Earl Thomas before he got injured.

Two elite players at their position.

Cardinals acquired Chandler Jones for 2nd rounder also. Patriots got Jonathan Cooper in that trade but they released him few months later.

Saints Cap Space.. $2.1M
Patrick Peterson's base salary this year $11M (cap hit $14M)

Why are there 4 pages on this lol? Who is Deon Sanders?

It's a good conversation piece for me on this Forum. I know it's highly unlikely to happen but I like to dream :p.

Awesome! Can we get Peterson paired with 29 year old Lyle Alzado in the trade as well? :bng::bng::bng:

If I am going to dream, its gonna be big .

There is approximately $12 million in 2018 roster bonuses that can be instantly converted to signing bonuses which would free up about $9 million in 2018 cap space. Plus, there are a number of players who have contracts that can easily be restructured/extended including Brees and Cam Jordan. Plus, Peterson's contract can be restructured, as well. Cap space wouldn't be an issue. Not saying it would happen, but the transaction is doable.

Can't ignore we have a serious liability opposite Lattimore, so discussion about trading for a CB at this point is the only serious option on the table...

But you're right, trading two draft picks for Davenport, no matter how well he's coming on was stupid, foolish and costly; it left us without an in-season option...
