Observations From The Saints' win vs Ravens

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Saints put up 24 points on the leagues top defense ... on the road. Extremely difficult to do. I'll take that. On to Minnesota....

No, Vonn Bell, the safety was, again, too slow to react and take the hand-off in coverage - a common theme with our safety play this year...

Bell was on the right hash at the snap (21 yards from the pylon, Brown was 15 yards from the same pylon) and moves right with the Tight End (Hurst), obviously shadowing the Tight End. Davis is in position to cover Hurst as well.

Lattimore dropped Brown for Hurst and Bell immediately tries to fix Lattimore's mistake but there is no way he can close the gap.

Lattimore's mistake all the way.

Unless you think the Saints design a safety to cover 21 yards in the time it takes a WR to cover 15.

It’s Cover 2 bro. Lattimore is supposed to be in the flats. A receiver was making his way into his zone so he came up like he’s supposed to. He drifted for a little while like he should then came up when somebody came in the flats. That was all on Bell. He got caught trying to watch the QB eyes. Nobody was coming up the seams to hold him at the hash for that long.

If I had to guess who made a mistake between Lattimore or Vonn Bell, it would be the easiest guess ever.

It was obvious Lattimore was meant to cover the flats and take the TE coming towards him, Vonn Bell just didn't notice John Brown.

If he wouldn't have their TE would have got the 1st down. The LB should have rolled with the TE but the cover two zone had the LB not extending that far out. The safety was took far away in the cover two.

Everybody did the right thing. It was a perfect call against that defense.

I hope we trade for an upgrade in the secondary.

If the Saints coaching staff is expecting a safety in Cover 2 to travel 21 yards against a WR that is only 15 yards from the goal line, comes off the line untouched and allowed outside then our coaching staff is not even remotely competent.

It is impossible for Bell to travel in a straight line to where Brown scored before Brown gets there unless Lattimore stands him up before releasing him or directs him inside.

So either Bell was lined up over the tight end in error, the coaches are idiots or Lattimore made an error.

Both safeties lined up over the slot receivers. On the opposite side of the field the corner carried his receiver to the five and gave up the flat.

Lattimore released Brown at full speed at the ten. Bell has already moved 5 yards towards that sideline but he is still 15 yards away from the pylon.

Bell would have to sprint from his position at the snap to have any hope of meeting Brown at the pylon.

Blaming it on a late recognition or reaction is stupid. Usain Bolt would have struggled to get there in time out the blocks.

Bell was out of place at the snap. Klein is retreating to the same zone Bell was in. There's no reason for Bell to be where he was. Davis is playing the hook, Klein in playing the deep, Rankins is the underneath middle.
Either way, it was horrible execution just like we've seen in every game this year.
