Re: In Saints' comeback win over Ravens, take note of these interesting personnel changes

The Saints had a few interesting things happen with the player usage during Sunday's 24-23 win over the Baltimore Ravens.

Perhaps the notable aspect of the usage is that safety Marcus Williams only played 64.7 percent of the snaps. The free safety did not miss a snap during the first five weeks of the season, and never played fewer than 75 percent of the snaps as a rookie.

Coach Sean Payton seemed to indicate that he suffered some kind of injury late in the game.

Offensively, wide receiver Tre'Quan Smith was the main beneficiary of Ted Ginn Jr. landing on injured reserve. He played 73 percent of the snaps, while Cam Meredith played 25 percent. One of the reasons for this might have been how run-oriented the offensive game plan was.

With Andrus Peat out, Josh LeRibeus played the first 30 snaps before becoming injured. Cameron Tom played the next 41.

Breaking news: someone got injured and was replaced. I though I was about to read an interesting article about personnel groupings or defensive schemes. The only thing reported here is some people played more snaps than usual.

Well, if you read Line 2, Marcus Williams hadn't missed a snap, then this game he only saw approximately 2/3rds of the defensive snaps...

In line four, referring to Tre'Quan Smith seeing 3/4ths of the snaps, without Ginn, the game was definitely tilted toward running the ball...

Believe the writer was trying to show because of who played, it affected the play-calling, type of game played...

Not putting Drew in harms way as much throwing the ball with missing starting offensive linemen, but rather running the ball...

Will say that you need to look at previous games and there was noticeable break in who saw snaps in the Ravens game vs previous games...

Keep an eye on Marcus. I think some of his issues have been because he's been focusing on Crawley's coverage . If/when Eli can get adjusted at the #2 CB spot, Williams can roam & become a ball hawk again.

There was quite a bit of 12 and 22 personnel in play against the Ravens, if I remember correctly. All of those extra TE's reduced the slot utilization, but created more pass protection and run opportunities. You can really tell what happened by these snap counts. Very telling.

In the single-high sets, yes, but in the cover-2, I believe Coleman/Bell has been Crawley's support; either way Apple is the two-pick gamble that needs to pay off for this 2018 team...

Yep, highlights the big shift in this roster and play-calling that began last year, track-meet mode with Brees' passing AND pound the rock, wear good defenses down for the fourth quarter...

Evidenced by what we saw against a good Baltimore defense that was unable to stop us in the second half...
