Fantasyguru report on coaching changes

New Orleans Saints Head Coach: Jim Haslett (holdover) Offensive Coordinator: Mike Sheppard Defensive Coordinator: Rick Venturi (holdover) ---------------- Overview: Sheppard was the team's quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons and takes over for Mike McCarthy, who wasn't retained. Before that, he spent one season as the Bill offensive coordinator. Previous to that, he was the Seahawk quarterbacks coach. Offensive Analysis: Head coach Jim Haslett wanted to emphasize the running game much more this season, so he moved away from McCarthy who prefers more of a West Coast offense that puts more attention to the passing game. Sheppard is expected to use more of a conservative gameplan, with a much stronger commitment to the running game and fewer risks. Some would call it a high percentage offense, which means lots of running on early downs and a balanced run-pass ratio. Final Analysis: The better commitment to the running game should mean better numbers for starting RB Deuce McAllister, who really was misused under McCarthy. But keep in mind their defense has been so bad the past few seasons that it's been hard to run the ball a lot. Unless the defense raises its level of play, the planned commitment to the running game might have to be shelved. |
