Saints WR Michael Thomas and agent separate over ‘difference of opinions’
 

Whenever New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas negotiates his next contract, he will not be doing it with agent David Mulugheta of Athletes First sports agency.

The two separated Friday (Nov. 2), a break in the relationship that was first reported by ESPN.

Mulugheta cited a “difference of opinion” as the reason behind their separation. Thomas declined interview requests in the Saints locker room Friday. As of Friday, he no longer had an agent listed in the NFL Players Association system.

Thomas is currently in the third year of a rookie contract that runs through the 2019 season. His performance on the field — 254 catches, 3,051 yards and 18 touchdowns in 38 career games — suggests he is in line for a massive pay day in the near future.

Odell Beckham Jr. set the market for NFL wide receivers this offseason when he inked a five-year deal with the Giants that could earn him as much as $95 million, $65 million of which is guaranteed. Tampa Bay’s Mike Evans, Houston’s Deandre Hopkins and Los Angeles' Brandin Cooks all recently signed deals that will pay them $80 million over the course of the contract.

Thomas' base salary earned him a little less than $1 million this season. He is slated to earn $1.1 million next season.

I’m hoping the difference in opinion comes from Thomas not wanting to totally decimate the teams cap?

Maybe he wanted to give the Saints a discount and the agent was wanting to get everything he could?

Two agent changes in three years. It’s his career so he’s well within his right to choose who he does business with... I just hope he’s not becoming a pain in the butt.

I just hope that we can afford to keep Thomas on the team. He is clutch! From his twitter posts he sounds a little immature. So, he may not be looking at anything but the money.

He's a beast, a top 5 guy.
his numbers have dropped off after a ridiculous start though: 1 TD in 4 games, high of 81 yards

FWIW, the WR franchise tag is 16 million, Beckham makes 18, AB 17

No way we let him get away UNLESS he becomes a distraction like Moss or TO. I can’t say I’m not a little worried about that. Like others have said he acts a little immature. Hopefully he grows out of it. He has also become one of the biggest smack talkers in the NFL on the field . That part is fine, along as it’s aimed at the competition.

As much as I love Thomas, I’ve been noticing more and more of the annoyance behavior traits.

He’s on a type of team that doesn’t come around very often, I hope he’s not too young and dumb to appreciate it.

Wouldn’t surprise me if he’s gone in the next couple years.

I don't understand a lot of the youth culture either, but I'm not gonna worry and post a bunch of conjecture about his maturity when none of us here knows jack.

It would be absolutely stupid to let him go. You build an offense around a guy like this. He is the player that makes inexperienced QB look better as they develop and extends the career of aging QBs. He is the guy that can keep this organization competitive during a transition period. So what if he’s a pain in the ass. He will be much more of a pain in opposing teams asses.

The Saints have no one else remotely close to the skill and talent of Thomas at the position. If another wide receiver emerges, then different story. But right now, you lose Thomas, you lose a serious amount of the offense.

A player of Mike's caliber is paramount for this offense, especially when Brees calls it a career.

I could see Aikman and Joe Buck getting disgusted by just his shirt coming untucked. Plus he probably didn’t fill out the forms and get proper authorization to celebrate in such an undignified way!

Football fans love that kind of stuff. The NFL either doesn’t understand it’s customers — or worse, assume they’re stupid.

It’s just a matter of generation hypocrisy. The baby boomers came up in the peace, love, and free sex hippie era. All of a sudden they are the moral majority and look down on today’s youths music and culture. Exactly the same way their parents generation looked down on their music and culture. It comes with getting old.
