Saints sign Brandon Marshall

1 Attachment(s)
For the second week in a row, the Saints are adding a veteran wide receiver to the roster.

It’s Brandon Marshall this time and he will take the spot that Dez Bryant was expected to fill when he signed with the team last week. Bryant tore his Achilles in practice on Friday, however, and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that New Orleans got a deal done with Marshall on Monday.

Unlike Bryant, Marshall has played in the NFL this season. He played in seven games with the Seahawks before being released last month. Marshall had 11 catches for 136 yards and a touchdown during his time in Seattle.

The Saints are the seventh team to employ Marshall and none of the other six made it to the playoffs while Marshall was on the team. It would take a pretty major change of fortune for the 8-1 Saints for that streak to continue.

Do any of you thing that Marshal will never make the playoffs because the Saints will cut him with Ted Ginn Jr comes back?

Why did the Hawks release him?

I have to admit, I felt better about Dez Bryant than I do about Marshall. However, I have to trust the coaching staff and Brees. They must have seen something in his workout that showed them he can be valuable.

Seahawks are a run 1st team (see Rams game) & sneaky Pete is opted to go with the "youth movement".

Agreed. I don’t like this move and I can’t really put my finger on why. Just don’t like Brandon Marshall.

I think Marshall is more of a depth signing (in case of injury). If Ted Ginn Jr can return to form, more likely Brandon gets waived.

For whatever reason, in my mind, it seems to me that BM had a rep of dropping catchable balls. But then again, so did Ted Ginn before he left Carolina. Could also be subconscious, based on the fact that he was NO Brass' second option, after Dez. That in and of itself gives you pause.

I just hope we can hang onto Kirkwood, he looked really good in his debut. I doubt we can hide him on the PS now...

I think all this is insurance.
Front office optimizing talent before free agency period ends.
We're beefing up on WR depth. Since Ted Ginn went on IR, one jet sweep arm of our multi armed octopus offense was taken away.

If Michael Thomas gets hurt, we want a veteran available.
YES we have young talent, but we want a hungry veteran who has been dying to play in the playoffs with a winning team.

Brandon Marshall should bring his best, just like Dez would have.

Remember, teams are double and triple teaming Michael Thomas and he's getting banged up. Same thing happened to Jimmy Graham and he was never the same after getting mauled in the 2011-2012 seasons.

Hopefully he still has something left in the tank. And, hopefully, they go easy on him in practice.

Re: Saints sign Brandon Marshall

I'm not worried about his hands (still holds the record for receptions in a single game), I'm worried about his legs. Can he get separation on routes or will he just be in for endzone jump balls?

My money is on Kirkwood.

I think we proved yesterday....receivers we do not need. SECONDARY Studs.... cuz.... They SUCK

I think he did have something of a streaky reputation early in his career, that seems about right. He also had a bit of a troublemaker rep when he was younger. To his credit though, he worked on both issues and they haven't been a problem for years. The bad attitude was the result of some mental issues, which he has been getting regular treatment and therapy for since several years ago and hasn't had any sort of drama. He's a pretty outspoken advocate for mental health awareness these days. And as far as on the field stuff goes, he's been a dependable pass catcher for the better part of a decade. Don't get me wrong, I'm not super excited about the signing or anything. He's pretty far from his prime, but I don't think you have anything to worry about, aside from whether he can learn the offense and get open.

It would have taken dez 4 games full speed to get with the program shape he would then hit a wall for a while (yes I’ve played that game before ) it takes time dez was insurance for MT that’s all BM is insurance yes he has played but still will be rusty the rook is the ticket to the supppppprrrrrrboooowwwwllll

I forgot all about that. Great comment.

The thing I like about Marshall is he is a terrific run-blocker. Maybe just let him run hitches and sideline routes and run block until he gets more familiar with our offense. Also he's been in a ton of different offenses over his career so he should be used to adapting, right?

Not a fan. But, if he has anything left, Brees will make him look good.

Re: Saints sign Brandon Marshall

He is still a red zone threat
He can still win a jump ball and had good hands

Its a depth move, but so was Dez.
Lets face it he will be in constant single coverage even in the red zone and put the ball up high and its odds on he catches it or gets a penalty

Re: Saints sign Brandon Marshall

I like the move. I know he is past his prime but ive seen the dude look unstoppable in games before. Now he will have a lot of 1 on 1 matchups.

I don't love it like I did with Dez, but I guess I don't hate it. Depth. Nothing wrong with depth.

One thing I didn’t really consider...

I suppose we wouldn’t have signed him if those guys didn’t give the thumbs up.

Re: Saints sign Brandon Marshall

IMO Marshall is a much more accomplished version of Brandon Coleman. He’ll provide veteran leadership and hopefully fill his role - however it comes.

Re: Saints sign Brandon Marshall

His lack of playoffs, coming on with a winner I think motivates him. Could end up being a really good signing. We aren't losing anything wither way

On the vet minimum my guess it'll all come from the dollar tree!

Re: Saints sign Brandon Marshall

He is a large man. 6'5, 235lbs. This is for blowing up holes for the run game. Maybe some token passes but mainly blocking.

We have decent WR's but when MT doesn't drop anything what is the point. He catches like 98.9% of everything thrown his way. Sun, some really sick catches especially the one In the EZ.

He's an upgraded, more polished version of Brandon Coleman.

Tre was doing a hell of a job in blocking vs the Bengals.

As the #2/"Y" guy, he cleared out routes for the "X" and "Z" wr's. You'll see him more on those deep routes, however his chances on Sunday were limited.

Based on the snap count, Tre did his job and did it well.

Trust me, come playoffs he'll get "his". Sean P simply spreads the wealth around from week to week.

Edit: see snap count from last week's game.
