With a 53 man roster (46 active on game day) it is virtually impossible to completely rest most of your starters (33 or more total including special teams). For example, when you are only carrying eight offensive linemen at the very least two regular starters will have to play at least most of the game, if not all. You may be able to sit Thomas and Kamara, but the rest will be forced into playing far more snaps than normal. Also, take into mind, that with so many backups in play there is a far greater chance that one of the normal starters that has to be on the field will suffer an injury. Missed blocks and missteps could cause rolled ankles and such.

It's a bit of a double edged sword.

Just yesterday a story broke on espn where coach Payton was advocating the increase of game day rosters.

Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller talked about that yesterday on Moving the Chains. They've both been advocating that for years now on the show. Kirwan added that virtually every owner he has spoken with about increasing the game day active roster size has been on board with the idea. They also added that the subject has never even been brought to the floor for discussion with the rules committee. They said it is beyond stupid to have a player on the sideline wearing street clothes getting paid his full game day salary when the team has run out of healthy players at his position during the game. They pointed out that the Saints were one injury away from having a TE filling in at OT this past game.

The expansion of the game day roster should have been made years ago. Hopefully this will gain traction and why not increase it not only to 53 but say 55.

Leonard was snapped up by Arizona and he is currently on their practice squad/injured list. He was a victim of the numbers game.

If you're on the 53, you should be able to suit up and play.
