Saints' Taysom Hill on interception: ‘I need to throw a better ball and avoid a bad play’
The New Orleans Saints had mixed results earlier this season when do-it-all backup quarterback Taysom Hill threw passes, but there’s no doubt his throw on Sunday was a dud.
On the Saints’ opening drive, Hill moved to quarterback, took the shotgun snap and then chucked it deep looking for wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. The ball hung in the air long enough for Steelers safety Sean Davis to chase it down for an interception in the end zone. “We were trying to get a shot downfield,” Hill said of the play. “We thought there might be a matchup that we could take advantage of. At the end of the day, I haven’t seen the film, but I need to throw a better ball and avoid a bad play.” That was Hill’s first career interception. He was previously 3 of 6 for 64 yards passing in 2018. “The ball got a little high on him,” coach Sean Payton said Sunday of Hill’s interception. “I felt like it was a little bit higher than we had planned. It was a great play by the safety.” more on NOLA | |

It was a decent throw. DB made great play. More time to work with Ginn probably different results. The run was there though, probably easy 15 yards. He also made the tackle despite a BS horse collar that was not a horse collar IMO. He grabbled the jersey it looked like...meh.

I thought the same. Just a good play by the defender. Thomas would have won that matchup. I’m surprised they even went with a play involving Ginn. Doubt he and Taysom have had a ton of time to work on that. The timing is bound to be pretty different with Ginn as opposed to Thomas.

I don't think it was that good of a throw. We looked really good that drive. I don't know why Sean went all slick. Keep running and short passes. Score at least a FG.

It was a poorly thrown ball. Underthrown.

My take is that there are many quarterbacks that come into this league and struggle because they don't get the necessary reps to get their timing down and to adjust to what is referred to NFL Game Speed... This is why I'd like to see a minor league system for the NFL so that quarterbacks could be called up and would have a better performance adjusting to Sunday game speed, offensive sets... Also, folks tend to have short memories when reflecting back on certain players' careers who struggled mightly, even briefly demoted, before going on to NFL success... The quarterbacking situation in New Orleans reminds me of the 1980's 49ers and Taysom Hill's skill set, situation reminds me very much of Steve Young... Many aren't sold on him yet as Bree's heir apparent, but fans are spoiled with great QB play by the standard Brees has set, and Taysom Hill has got to have that game experience to develop... Really believe Payton's putting Hill in all these packages is not only to get a great athlete on the field, fire up the team, but to try to find Hill some experience while still having the best quarterback in the league... But, expecting a QB to deliver a deep ball strike cold without having thrown that many balls pre-game, and on the sideline, again, even if the play was early on in the game, just seemed foolish on Payton's part... Other teams know he's a QB so it's not like WRs running a fly or post, are gonna be as open with a Kamara throwing an HB-option as Hill running; but I suspect we'll see this play again and Hill will better execute... |
It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...
