If you’re already sick of reading about Teddy Bridgewater this week, you’ve come to the wrong place.
Back when the New Orleans Saints traded for Bridgewater in August, fans wanted to know if he’d be the long-term replacement for Drew Brees. With Bridgewater starting Sunday (Dec. 30) against the Panthers, those questions are back. So, let’s get into it. This was the most popular question of the week, and it makes sense because Bridgewater is set to make his first start in almost three years. The realistic options are that the Saints re-sign him or let him leave in free agency. That’s it. One person asked about the franchise tag, but that’s not realistic. Last year’s tag for quarterbacks was $23 million. That’s a ridiculous price. It’s tough to project how much Bridgewater would net on the open market. The Jets gave Bridgewater a $6 million deal for 2018 before trading him to the Saints for a 2019 third-round pick. Based on how he played in the preseason, I certainly think he’ll make more than that this offseason, and if he thrives Sunday, his earning potential could rise even more. Let’s guess that some team would be willing to pay him $10 million next year - maybe more, maybe less. I don’t see how the Saints could pay that while they’re still paying Drew Brees and have some other big deals coming up. If Brees retires, that would change the equation entirely, but every indication Brees has given is that he wants to keep playing. more on NOLA |

Re: Breaking down Teddy Bridgewater’s future in New Orleans
My guess: He goes home to Miami. The Dolphins are moving on from HC Adam Gase and Ryan Tannehill.

Re: Breaking down Teddy Bridgewater’s future in New Orleans
I'd love to see Teddy become the heir to the throne. I think he's a perfect fit for Payton's offense and he's one of the good guys.
But the only way that that happens is if Drew retires, or says that he will retire after the 2019 season and we give Teddy a large backloaded contract so his cap doesn't kill us next year. If we win it all, I wonder if Drew decides to retire. I'd love to keep Teddy, but Drew doesn't look like he could play 2 or 3 more years easily. |

I simply do not see any way Teddy is in New Orleans next year. |

Re: Breaking down Teddy Bridgewater’s future in New Orleans
I started thinking that trading a 3rd round pick for him was an absolute waste and an overreaction to the Eagles winning a Super Bowl with their backup QB... But now we’re hearing about how going against Bridgewater in practice has been so beneficial to our defense. In that sense maybe it’s paid off in an unexpected way.

management will make that decision. They know what they have in Teddy and I am sure they will base it off of that and the cost.

Who cares. Chips are all in this year. Payton thinks he’s good enough to step in and keep us competitive if Brees goes down. Maybe trade if someone important went down earlier in the season. I don’t think he cares after that. They accomplished what they wanted.

Re: Breaking down Teddy Bridgewater’s future in New Orleans
I'm gonna hate to see him go, and I believe we'll come to regret it. I know a lot of folks werent impressed today, but I saw what I needed to see. Given the full offense, both in terms of playbook and players, he could keep this team in the mix for years to come. He may never be Brees level great, but there are only a small handful of guys throughout the history of this league who even deserve to be mentioned alongside Drew. Teddy is gonna be a good QB for somebody pretty soon, I'd rather it be for us. I think we have one more year with Drew, two at the most. If they could convince Teddy to stick around on a 2 year deal he could inherit a team full of studs and he'd have complete knowledge and command of the offense. I'm hoping that might somehow be enough to keep him here. Money talks though, so we'll see.
