The rivalry between the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons is the stuff of legend. It’s a passionate, long-lasting duel that goes back far in their mutual history – further than that time the Falcons blew a 28-3 lead in the Super Bowl, back beyond that time Atlanta scored just 2 points in a playoff game against Eli Manning, and on and on.

Retirement from the NFL doesn’t put that rivalry to rest, either. That’s what former Saints linebacker Scott Shanle showed on Twitter, responding to a tweet from Falcons running back Devonta Freeman in Feb. 2018.

“Super Bowl 53 we coming for that,” Freeman tweeted. This was not long after the conclusion of Super Bowl 52, so Freeman was using the occasion to motivate himself, his teammates, and his fans at the start of a long offseason. It was a nice gesture.

Shanle’s retort was, well, not so nice. He smugly chimed in, “Please leave the keys in the lock box (we’re) visiting next month. Go Saints.” That’s just great – he’s referencing the scheduling arrangement for this year’s Super Bowl, in which the NFC representatives (possibly the Saints) will get to train with the Falcons’ facilities at their headquarters in Flowery Branch, as well as Atlanta’s home locker room in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
