Saints signed backup TE Garrett Griffin through 2020 season
The New Orleans Saints promoted practice squad tight end Garrett Griffin ahead of the NFC championship game, and he ended up catching a touchdown from quarterback Drew Brees. But a report from Josh Katzenstein of the Times-Picayune suggests that won’t be the last chance Griffin gets to help out New Orleans: when he was promoted, Griffin and the Saints agreed to a three-year contract that secures his future through 2020.
That’s a bigger move than it appears on the surface. The Saints were scheduled to go into free agency with just one tight end under contract for 2019 (bulked-up wide receiver Dan Arnold). But they worked quickly to re-sign veteran Josh Hill in the wake of Ben Watson’s retirement, and were also able to return Griffin on a minimum-salary deal. So now they have a bare-bones depth chart in place at the position. https://saintswire.usatoday.com/2019...hill-contract/ |

Re: Saints signed backup TE Garrett Griffin through 2020 season
This position has to be addressed this off season. The Coby Fleener miss is still impacting us and can not happen again in free agency. Hill is good at what he does as a blocking tight end who can catch an easy pass but he's not a receiving tight end. And we need one desperately! We took a shot that Ben Watson had another year and him getting hurt and missing a lot of games was costly. Dan Arnold looks like he has potential. But at the moment that is all he has is potential. We need a check down valve for Drew. I'm hoping for a possible trade or a stud in the draft with our 2nd round pick.

I'd like to see us pursue C.J. Uzomah in free agency.
