Positional Rankings: Center By Pete Prisco

1. Kevin Mawae, Jets He's clearly the best at this position. Mawae can move and he's strong enough to handle people at the point of attack.
2. Olin Kreutz, Bears Kreutz plays with a nasty streak coaches love. He's one of the true tough guys in the middle of an NFL line.
3. LeCharles Bentley, Saintss He has the ability to top the center list, but he needs to put it all together after making the move from guard to center. There is no meaner center in the game.
4. Jeff Saturday, Colts He makes as many line calls as Peyton Manning, which says something about his importance to the Colts offense. Not physically imposing, but he fights all day long.
5. Matt Birk, Vikings A perennial Pro Bowl player, Birk is a power center. Injuries are a concern as he won't be ready for training camp.
6. Jeff Mitchell, Panthers A smart player who keys the Panthers line. He isn't a great athlete, but he makes up for it with his toughness and desire and smarts.
7. Hank Fraley, Eagles A smallish center who somehow finds a way to get the job done. He isn't pretty by any stretch, but he's key to the Eagles line.
8. Jeremy Newberry, 49ers If not for injuries, he'd be higher up this list. Newberry's knees make him a question mark heading into this season. If he does play, how effective can he be?
9. Dominic Raiola, Lions He isn't a big center, so he struggles with players on his nose. He's a tough guy who will battle an opponent all day long.
10. Tom Nalen, Broncos Nalen doesn't play at the same level he did a few years back, but still a quality center. Gets by with toughness and smarts more than physical ability
